I have a picc line in at the moment but I'm thinking of asking for a port as I'm finding the picc very restricted I'm having to have nurse in once a week for flush then bloods and I find it difficult with clothes it's bulky. I'm also worried about getting it caught.

So I was wondering if any of you have a port if so..

Whats it like, painful to have needle Inserted fir chemo ?

Whats it like to have fitted?

Thanks in advance xx

  • Hi HazG.

I have a portacath and have from start.

Mine has been painful at times, but i think this is due to my cancer in nerves rather than the norm.

For me, it's still much better than needles into hard to find arm veins and is pretty easy to cover with standard clothing.

For females - it's important that you show the surgeon on the day where your bra strap normally sits so they can avoid that spot.

You may struggle with car seat belts straight after op - so you may want pillow or cushion on stomach to lift belt slightly away from body.

Feel free to ask anything more if you have more queries.

  • Thank you that's really helpful whats it like when they insert needle for chemo also do they take your bloods from it.

Sorry all these questions Slight smile

  • Hi HazG

No problem, feel free to ask away.

Inserting needle - generally easy peesie. More recently mine has become a bit tender but i think that is my body having issues from nerve + infection issues from elsewhere in my body.

Bloods - i have had some bloods taken from it (very easily done), but still have blood from arm out of choice most times. This was due to fact I was given conflicting advice at start : some healthcare professionals believe best to keep port dedicated to chemo and minimise risk, while others believe it's fine to take blood from there all the time. I didn't know who to believe.

  • They take bloods from my picc line as I'm a bit difficult to get bloods from Rolling eyes

    Might mention to my oncologist

    Thank you
