My husband was diagnosed with low rectal cancer (T2/T3a No Mo. After 5 weeks of chemo and radiotherapy and follow up CT & MRI scans the results have come back as 'significant response to tumour'. We saw the consultant this week who said the tumour has significantly reacted to the treatment. My husband is going for a biopsy & camera procedure so the consultant can see if there is anything obvious left. The consultant said there was two options, but would not advise him what to do. If there is any sign of cancer then it will be an APR operation followed by 6 weeks of chemo to mop up any stray cancer cells. If nothing is showing/results come back negative then he will also be offered the option of 'Wait & See'. The problem with Wait and See is when they take a biopsy of the area they can't test every bit of it and there might be an area not tested. Also there might be some cancer cells so small they would not show up on the camera. The cells might also be hiding in the bowel lining or just the other side. I would be interested to hear feedback from anyone who has been on the 'Wait & See' program.
Hi Honeysuckle
Welcome to the forum . Your husband sounds like a great responder to treatment but it does bring a dilemma to the table . I have linked in a thread you might like to read and will link in Jogey as they are further down this road . I will also link in another thread below where there is a more recent discussion where others at a similar stage have participated and you might find it beneficial to chat it through with them .
Take care ,
