Watch and wait update: Rectal wall thickening.

Hi all ,

So I am now four years into my watch and wait for a stage 3 rectal cancer that had a complete clinical response to radiotherapy and I have been very lucky to be clear so far.

At this stage my hospital normally does only a CT scan, sigmoidoscopy and CEA test.

So the CEA was normal, and the CT scan found no evidence of metastasis. In the rectum, there was no evidence of discrete lesions, but they did say that the rectum is somewhat diffusely
thick walled. Now it is possible that this is simply due to the rectum being more distended compared to last time. Also if this was cancer recurrence, it would be more likely to be focal rather than diffuse.

The surgeon says she isn't too worried for these reasons and because the risk of recurrence is much lower after all this time. However they are concerned enough to order an MRI of the
rectum. I should have the results of this and the sigmoidoscopy in about 3 weeks.

It's interesting as after year 3 you only get checked once a year on watch and wait and you can live a pretty normal life and more or less forget about the cancer.

But this snaps you right back into it. I'm a veteran now and my policy is not to worry about it till the actual day I get the results. It will be what it will be.

Wish me luck though as I wish luck to you all.

Take care, Jogey

  • Any investigation still requires some processing and I am sorry you have to endure it .

However they do seem to know what the appearance of these things look like . I guess they see them several days a week !

Also good they are being thorough but it’s not the easiest of things to adjust to .

You have done so well and I am

holding out for more good news .

  • Hi all, so a further update after a sigmoidoscopy and MRI.

    1) The thickening of the bowel wall found on the CT was not found on the MRI so that is no longer a concern.

    2) However the MRI found some signal abnormalities in the area of my original tumour in the mucosa (the lining of the rectum) these can
sometimes indicate cancer so an endoscopy was recommended to investigate.

    3) However at the sigmoidoscopy the mucosa was thoroughly examined by the surgeon and no cancer was found. In fact there is not even a scar identifiable where the original tumour was!

    4) What all this means is that I am really pleased to say that I am now 4 years in remission from cancer after the complete response to radiotherapy which is obviously terrific as the longer I am in remission the less likely recurrence is.

I feel great and have no symptoms from the radiotherapy and chemotherapy that I had and bowel function is completely normal. For anyone considering watch and wait those are the potential huge benefits. But the process I have just gone through shows that it can be stressful as you have so many scans and endoscopies on watch and wait that it quite often happens that they throw up concerns that have to be investigated further. However I have got used to having scary scans and have developed coping mechanisms as I think any watch and wait veteran probably does.

I have been posting this firstly as the forum gives great support but also when I started watch and wait it helped me a lot to see forum posts from other people on watch and wait so I hope if it helps any of you out there that is great.

All in all for me watch and wait has been wonderful so far, but I'm still in the process. I plan to post again at the five year mark
