Going for Surgery

I've had the Colonoscopy, two CT scans and two keyhole cuts. I met one of my consultants yesterday to decide my treatment. He told me I'm T4 that is about 80 mm in size. Then he told about the options between Chemo' and Surgery. I'd already discussed my treatment with my wife an son after my first diagnosis and we agreed surgery was our preferred treatment if it was available. I've opted for the surgery followed by Chemo' procedure. The after and side affects of Chemo' didn't sound all that attractive which helped me make my choice.

Are folk on here suffering any serious side effects from Chemo'

I'm just waiting now for my letter with a date, hopefully not too long. You can't really plan anything without a date. can you.

  • Hello, and good luck with whatever treatment plan you end up following.

I had 8 rounds of chemotherapy at roughly 3 week intervals last year. Other than tiredness, for me always a day or 2 after the treatment I can’t recall any significant side effects. The first session was the worst (I suspect it is for everyone !) though the doctor adjusted subsequent doses and the speed they were administered.

I would hesitate to say that I looked forward to the sessions, but they were definitely not something that I dreaded or worried about.

once again, best of luck with your treatment

  • All the best with your treatment plan . My mum op’s for surgery where possible .

She has also had two years worth of chemo back in 2010 and 2011 ( stage 4) . Some weeks were tougher than other but boy did it work . Given her years of great living and got her to surgery .

The thing about it she had a good team who could make adjustments or add in other treatments to help . Lots of good hydration and keeping her food intake up .

    Take care ,

  • I had surgery followed by 4 rounds of chemo- CAPOX following  T3N1MO staging. Chemo was ok, just tiredness on the fourth and final round, Finished late December 2022, still have mild neuropathy in hands and feet but should get better with the warmer weather whenever that arrives. I was able to work and complete my daily routines whilst on chemo. The only time off I had was when I had the chemo transfusion on day 1 of the cycle. So day 1 - day attendance hospital for chemo intraveneously, then 14 days of oral chemo, then one week off, then back to day 1. Repeat 4 times Hope this helps

  • Hi' Mel M. Many thanks, not knowing what is in front of me I get the blues on occasion, your info' it is a great help.

  • Hi Jagman

Some people get lucky and little/no side effects. Others have a tough time and can have lasting side effects.

The Macmillan and BowelCancerUK sites both have good information about general side effects that could be experienced with different treatments. But your oncologist will also be able to consider your own personal history and reactions to things, to personalise advice and treatment.

Most importantly, you'll be in the driving seat so if ever ypu don't like a side effect (potentisl or actusl), then your oncologist can offer alternatives / change things part way through.
