Hi jkee
I can understand your fear. The colorectal nurses should advice him on diet.
I had an Ileostomy so my diet was drastically changed after my LAR. It consisted of low fibre small portions
Does he have a colostomy or Ileostomy ?
If you’re unsure you could phone the hospital or here for advice
Best wishes
Ann
Hello Jkee ,
As Anne has said, the colorectal nurses or enhanced recovery nurses will probably load you with info. Do ask to meet them or speak on the phone if you are not sure. They will put your mind at rest. There is also the MacMillan helpline.
I’m about to have surgery & won’t know until I wake whether I’ll have a stoma of some kind. Either way, diet will be low fibre (low residue) to start. Post recovery is also about nutrition, protein to help cell regeneration & reduced processed foods. Veggies/fruit have been limiting for me pre op & will hopefully slowly be introduced. Smaller meals more regularly are also advised post surgery, so rather than 3 meals have 5 or 6 small meals.
Good luck & wishing your hubby a good recovery.

Hi jkee
One step at a time. Whatever operation your hubby has had the bowel will be sensitive as it won’t like being pulled about
Mine was rectal cancer which is different
The hospital will give you all his dietary needs and you will be able to eat together when he’s home
I sat to the table and ate with my husband straight away. The exercise did me good , although I did eat on the sofa at lunch time
Just focus on you at the moment the hospital will look after your husband make sure you eat and rest it’s vital that you take care of yourself as when he’s home you’ll be busy busy
Once you find out what operation he’s had then the medics here can advice you or others here that have had the same operation if his hospital are difficult to talk to
I hope you have an okay weekend remember look after you too
Sending you a hug
Ann
You have been plummeted into this very quickly as an emergency. I’ve had time to digest & plan. I am sure they will take time to explain everything that has been done. Plus what will support recovery. They will support you to do this. Sounds like you’re already thinking ahead to get things right, your husband is in good hands with the hospital and you.
It’s natural that your brain has gone into fight or flight & doing all the over thinking & panic. Breathing exercise & mindfulness really will help you.
There will be people here that share your experience that will give you some reassurance.
Big virtual hugs.
Thank you I think because we have had 2 emergency first one rushed in at christmas found blood clots said he had a bleed somewhere but come back sent home with covid the week later rushed back with a blockage found mass we dont really know what next step is apart from waiting for 2 weeks results feels like I'm running on empty but yes think it will hit us both when home thankyou for listening
Hi J kee my husband had a resection in Oct i you search online with he operation type you will find diet info, but NO seeds hard fruits, nuts etc or veg till it heals inside just a low residue diet pasta, mash soft foods etc my husband has done well with op but chemo is really boring him as he cold affects him and he can go out at all at moment hope all goes well x
Hi
Glad your husband id coming home.
I am 5 weeks post surgery and really strughled with food. Does your husband have a stoma? The diet is different if he does.
If not i was advised to eat anything. Although very careful i suffered severe stomache ache and constipation. I believe each trust offers different advice. I felt ill and the pain was horrendous. I asked someone who was advised to eat low fibre foods. On saturday i began this diet eating chicken and mash with mashed carrots. I enjoyed this meal and for the first time slept with no discomfort. 4 days along and I am finally feeling better. I will continue this diet and gradually introduce new foods. Its a small price to pay. Just wish i had known about this on being discharged x
