I have just messaged a nurse on here, then thought could ask on this forum as many of you may have experienced what I am going through!
Next Friday 20th January I have a colonoscopy through my stoma, which I suddenly think is a bit weird though obs they cant go the usual way as no route in now I gather!
I am most concerned about the prep before hand. I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and for that reason use closed pouches. I am trying to imagine how it will work, and also can I use some vaseline or bepanthenem on stoma to prevent soreness?
I really would value any ideas. My last colonoscopy which detected the cancer, I took the prep then when it started to work sat on the loo listening to music...obviously this time it will be different! Many thanks.
Hi there
I’ve just searched the web to check if my recollections were correct I believe that you won’t have to take prep
I remember this before on the Stoma support group. They’re a great bunch might be worthwhile joining

Hi LizzieJo
I haven’t had to have a colonoscopy with my stoma but I had a look in the stoma group, and it seems that prep is required according to someone else’s experience. Are you able to get a hold of some drainable bags just for going through this as it should make it easier? Do you have a stoma nurse who might have some to give you?
I don’t know if you can put anything actually on your stoma itself in terms of cream etc, and if you put anything on your skin round the stoma, my concern would be that the bags won’t stick.
I hope the nurse can help, but do ask your question in the stoma group where you might get replies from people who have gone through the procedure and have the right experience. Good luck !

Hi Lizzie
I had to take the prep when I had a colonoscopy but not when I had my iliostomy the difference is food is still entering your large bowel with the first.
There really is no easy way, I was given drainable bags but the force just blows them off I’m really sorry to tell you & that evening I got through all of my pj’s . I ended up wrapped in towels as it ends just fluids. Just have lots of changes ready is best advice.
I want to be more positive about this but it really is what it is I’m so sorry but better to be prepared I think. Everything can be washed & it’s only a short while for the greater good!!
maybe start fasting earlier would help?
Good luck xx
I honestly thought I had read something about this on the stoma group but couldn’t remember the detail so I just had another look.
But has confirmed what happens so all is good.

I had 6-month bloods etc yesterday and I mentioned that I'd not had a follow-up colonoscopy that should've happened last year. Upshot is that the surgeon says it won't be done as I still have the ileostomy (which isn't being reversed). I'm due a CT scan in May so they may do a specific colon scan as an extra at that point apparently. It's funny that different areas have different protocols. Can't say that I'm disappointed at missing the colonoscopy though!!
Sorry that I can't be much help. Hope it all goes well for you.
