What were your symptoms prior to diagnosis of bowel cancer?

Having read a post earlier, I thought it might be an interesting idea to collect & amass everyone's symptoms of bowel cancer, prior to their diagnosis. It seems to me, (when reading here,) that symptoms vary such a lot, particularly in regard to the specific site in the bowel. I am not sure whether this post has any purpose, but, it might be interesting for someone to collect all the data of personal experiences; yet also, reactions of GPs - when you first presented with symptoms. Yet also, it might help those that might be worrying about the possibility of whether they have bowel cancer.

& so, I'll start with mine:

My symptoms started in summer of 2018. At first, they were very vague - just a dull ache in a certain place in my lower left abdomen. At this stage, it was bothersome, but not enough for me to visit my GP. Soon after, I found I needed to dash to the loo with diarrhoea, then I had occasional bad stomach cramps & nausea. I then found I needed to lie down after eating lunch - & had extremely loud gurgling noises in my stomach - & I would massage my stomach, thinking it was just bad wind - & my thoughts were that I had IBS. A good friend asked me if I was losing weight - which I hadn't considered; but yes, I was having to wear a belt to keep up my jeans. Then, checking my weight, it was drastically reducing. The pain in my left side became ever more nagging, & after three visits to the GP, he ordered a Colonoscopy - which diagnosed a 5cm tumour in my descending bowel - which resulted in a left hemicolectomy in May 2019.

I knew that there was something wrong, but I had convinced myself that I had IBS. I never thought about bowel cancer at that time - probably because it was too frightening to consider.

On reflection, I am pleased with how my GP reacted to my symptoms, but that could be because of my age.

  •   This is not acceptable. You need a colonoscopy especially with a family history of bowel cancer. Complain and insist on seeing another doctor asap x

  • Totally agree.

It is all a lottery as regards GPs.

I was so fortunate as just moved house and to a new surgery so no relationship with it,

Had no real symptoms and no family history but went to check out some soreness in anal area. Practice nurse arranged immediate Fit test and bloods. Fit showed low blood at 24.7  and bloods all ok but new Gp immediately referred for colonoscopy at hospital of my choice a week later.

Not too concerned as low fit and no real symptoms but a malignant tumour discovered. Cat and Mra scan over next 3 weeks with lesion found on liver and lung. Just been told lung is ok and hope the hear this week regarding liver and tratment plan. Hospital brilliant ...no waiting and efficient.

But why can't it always be like this?

  • Thank you to everyone that replied...

Update: I called my GP on Friday (2 days ago) as I was immense pain the night before.

GP said that my stomach pain is not related to the bleeding from my backside and 'it's probably just piles'.

    I've tried everything's I can guys!

  • Hi  I’m really not sure why your doctors being so dismissive! ‘Probably’ is not an acceptable diagnosis. Have you had a colonoscopy recently? Please insist on being properly checked out. I’ve attached a link to a diary regarding symptoms that you could perhaps go armed with?

  • Hi missing her, I saddened to hear you are getting what I think is a poor response from your doctor.

Even if your stomach pain is maybe not linked with bleeding you should at least be checked out for piles.

My doctor had me in quickly to check for piles and none found so he sent me for coloniscopy which revealed a small tumor in the rectum. Caught early and cancer treatment successful.

Please insist you are seen and checked out.

  • Hi   this is totally appalling! Even without your family history a competent GP should be investigating this. I would insist on seeing another doctor, and complain to the practice manager. I would also consider going to A and E with the pain and the bleeding to kick start investigations.

Sorry you are dealing with this x

  • I have been having symptoms without realising, as they all sort of crept up on me. Increased frequency of visiting the toilet and looser and looser stools. Lack of appetite, fatigue, breathlessness, a pain in one spot on my lower left side for a little while now, especially after I eat. Narrowing of stool. I had two near misses where I didn’t think I’d make it to the toilet in time, and two separate episodes of a lot of blood in the toilet, one after only passing gas. Some days I have to literally run to the toilet after eating.

my consultant is incredible and when I told him about these symptoms he referred me for an urgent colonoscopy. Unfortunately I’ve already been waiting a month and it will be able least another month, so I’m trying to go private. I’m normally a very fit, active person, and am only 35, but I’m so tired now.

  • Hi   and a warm welcome to the board. That’s not great that you’re having to wait so long - an urgent/fast track referral is where the patient meets at least 2 of the main bowel cancer symptoms and the aim is to be seen within 2 weeks. Have you checked that your GP has fast tracked you and whether you could be contacted if there were any cancellations? It’s not fair that you should have to go private but I totally understand that you’re worried and want an explanation for your symptoms.

Please let us know how you get on?

    Take care

  • Thanks Karen. My referral was from my Gastro consultant, who is fighting the good fight for me! I have complete faith that he is trying his best to get me seen asap. I have been seeing him for a few years now, so he knows my condition well. I’ll keep you updated with the GP referral to private.

  • Hi Horsegirl, Could there have been a breakdown in communications in the request by your Gastro Consultant (to an NHS facility?) for a colonoscopy? Not sure why a GP should be involved at the stage of a Consultant 'ordering' a colonoscopy at a hospital. Might be worth alerting your Gastro Consultant that you are still waiting when you should already have had a colonoscopy. From my own experience, this should not be delayed like that. If you do go privately, your Consultant should be able to arrange this.) Best wishes,
