My mom was diagnosed last year early with bowel cancer and ended up having her op early this year with no extra treatment needed. She's had her first lot of bloods which were clear. What are the chances it can come bk?

There were a couple of polyups left but at time too small to remove just v worried

  • Hi . I’m afraid that’s impossible to answer. I was told that most reoccurrences happen within the first 2 years, by 3 years things are looking pretty good and by 5 years they stop monitoring you. Clear bloods is great news and presumably she’ll be having a scan at some point too?
I’ve attached a link to a paper that talks about life after cancer - a lot of people have found it helpful for both the patient and family members too

  • Had my op in august. No extra treatment, all done keyhole am on the 4 year plan with support from those lovely ladies of Macmillan keeping me on my toes. As a member of the cancer patient survivors. I now look at every day as special and hope it does not return. I said from day 1 when told it was cancer i will beat this, it will not get me down. I cannot praise the MDT team and all ward nurses that looked after me. Only in hospital a short time but met some really nice people in the same boat as me. Keep smiling life is to short to worry

  • My husband's bowel cancer came back after 4 months of being clear. Got his op in January this year and they got it all clear margins etc but at a follow-up in May it had unfortunately returned when blood tests showed high CEA markers and a CT scan confirmed it. This doesn't go for everyone though people's journeys are different. Take Care

  • Unfortunately, that's a question that no one can answer. We are only as good as our next scan.
