I've had my stoma for just over 3 weeks, I've had output every day, on 2 different days a week apart I had some orange juice, 250mls the 1st time 75mls the 2nd, on both occasions I had awful diarrhoea, on both occasions I took 2 loperamide capsules, sine the last episode, on Tuesday I've had no output from it. I'm worried as after my 1st op for the robotic LAR, qgter a few days my bowel went to sleep, had a week in hospital, then the blood supply that was a bit iffy had died, needed emergency op, and had a stoma, I spoke with my stoma nurse who said that I need to drink more, I drink at least 4 or 5 litres a day, on a bad day 3 litres, my other half keeps asking me if there's output, I've had some wind, but nothing else. Does anyone know if this is OK, I feel fine, which when I had the ileus I was really quite ill, which my other half picked up on, but I feel fine. Though I've only passed wind once today, my tummy is gurgling, he's making me worried. He also wants me to drink some orange juice, but both times I did, the diarrhoea was so bad, I had to sit on the loo with a bag, in a waste paper bin, under my stoma as I could change the bag as it was constant, for hours. I don't really want to repeat that, but if it gets things moving I may have too. Any suggestions would be grateful. I take 2 docusate in a morning and evening.
Hi there Miss Tee
We haven’t spoken in a while but reading your back story you’ve had a roller coaster ride
You've had a LAR so do you have an Ileostomy?
it’s just when I had mine I learnt tips that may help.
Three weeks is still early days and I was in a pickle for two until I changed my diet
Your fluids sound good to me
If you join the Stoma support group there’ll be lots of tips
You take care
Ann
Hi Miss Tee
My stoma took some weeks to become anything like regular or predictable. I never took any laxatives or such as I wanted to let my diet settle. I experimented with fibre content and so ate weetabix, wholegrain bread etc. I never had diarrhoea (thank goodness for spell checker!) and went through days of "nugget mode" followed by "porridge mode" (output that is). I had periids when there was no output for 2-3 days but that settled over time.
My worst was when I had beans on wholegrain toast with two fried eggs on top and that prompted a fairly dramatic purge!!!
Maybe try that?
Good luck
Me and my stoma
We live in harmony
He's so calm on me
Just doing his thing
No more ring!
Me and my stoma
Get on with ease
Life's a breeze
A blob on me tum
No more bum!
