Hi
my mum was diagnosed with colorectal cancer last month and she had her stoma surgery last Friday. Stoma seems to be working fine but she still has severe pain in her back passage and it’s bleeding. The doctor said only take paracetamol four times a day and each time only one dose as she is only 38 kg. Also they initially said that the cancer has spread to the liver after the MRI liver results but now they wanted another MRI liver to clarify. Also the treatment going to me radiotherapy and chemo therapy. I’m just wondering if she will have the surgery at the end.
any body went through the same ?
Hi Hopeallok
Welcome to the forum .
That’s great her stoma is working well . A big step forward .
I take it the pain and bleeding you are mentioning is from the tumour and not the stoma surgery ? Is that what you are referring to ? If not it’s best to get it checked out with her team . It’s such a shame she is not able to take more meds but I totally understand the implications .
The radiotherapy should hopefully start to work on that . I will link in a thread you might find helpful .
After it finishes it can still be working for a bit so they rescan and the Multidisciplinary team reevaluate. There is a subgroup who have a complete response but others would go to surgery if the person was fit and well .
My own mum had a spread to the liver . It comes down to location and size of spread but she went onto chemo first and then had surgery. Everyone is very individual in their treatment plan if it has spread to the liver but there are still many different ways to treat and manage that . If you click on my user name you can read my mum’s story .
Does she have a date for starting radiotherapy?
Send her our love .

Thank you so much for your response. Yes the pain and the bleeding is from the tumour. I have just read your story and it is giving me hope. Feeling positive ️. We don’t have a definite date but the next scan is going to be on the 27th so probably soon after that. All these are so new for me and a big shock. When I found out that the tumour has spread , again I almost lost hope as everyone says that it’s advanced so it’s going to be more complicated. But after reading your story , I’m feeling much better. Thank you so much.
Just wondered if you have a dietitian involved with your mum . Maintaining their weight can be a half the battle during treatment. Maybe something to get ahead with if you can .
One day at a time for sure . I need to pop out just now but I will link in a good leaflet which is very balanced on treatment pathways when cancer has spread .
Hope your holding up ok yourself.

Yes , you can ask her oncologist or go through her GP . If no joy our helpline staff can advise on 0808 808 0000.
I found maintenance of weight quite tough over treatment and if I was doing one thing differently it would have been to seek the advise of a professional.
