I had an anterior bowel resection in October 2021 for Stage 3 rectal cancer. Unfortunately I have a leak, sinus and worsening structure. Having endured 2 contrast enemas all the complications are still present. My options are limited to 2 choices - take it all down and do it again with not such a great outcome or have an Abdominoperitoneal resection ileostomy closure and formation of a permanent colostomy. I opted for the latter. My surgery date is September 1st. I am really scared of the pain I will experience and complications. I am looking for post op advice and reassurance. Thank you
Hi Win nie. Yes it is a big op but your pain will be well managed in hospital and you’ll be given pain killers for at home as well. There’s been quite a few posts on here in the past - I’ll link in a couple below but if you type ‘abdominoperineal’ or ‘apr’ or ‘anpr’ in the search box at the top of the screen then it will bring them up
There’s lots of people with stomas and a separate board where they’re happy to share advice and top tips

Hope this helps
Take care

Hi Win ie
I think that you’ve made a good choice because you’ve done the research.
I had a LAR , my nieces friend had a LAR. Hers was robotic and she was out and amazing. Mine was keyhole then incision to lift the bowel. Now iI am not saying this because I had a terrible time. I didn’t. My pain was managed in the hospital, then when I got home much to my surprise my GP was amazing. He gave me slow realise tablets and I really did okay
So maybe contact your GP just to have a chat to reassure you.
You may not need it however you’re covering all bases.
Sorry for the pun
Hope all goes well
Ann
Thank you. Pain management after the LAR was not great and the intermittent variable pain secondary to the anastomosis leak has been challenging - I have spoken to the surgeon about this so hopefully he has heard. The stoma itself does not worry me as I have had an ileostomy for the last 9 months.
it is reassuring to know that you have had the op and your pain was well managed. Thank you for posting a reply - appreciated.
