Hi there,

5 months since surgery for removal of rectal surgery.Had chemoradiation before but did not require any treatment after.Have an Ileostomy, temporary hopefully.I also had a hysterectomy at same time.Presently have a painful coccyx and the feeling of needing to poo! This is getting me down as finding it difficult to get any advice, suggestions on what would help.Feel very isolated and alone since end of treatment.Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

  • Hi . The feeling of needing to poo with an Ileostomy is quite normal and it may help to sit in the toilet and see if you can pass something. Although your bowel is not in use at the moment, it still produces the mucus that is used to help the stools move through and these can often be passed as little pinky coloured plugs. With a loop Ileostomy output can sometimes get into the ‘spare’ end of the stoma and work it’s way through and out of your bottom - again this is normal. If you have a look on the ileostomy, colostomy, stoma board then there have been a few posts recently about this

Sorry to hear that you’re feeling isolated and alone since finishing treatment. Perhaps you could ring your colorectal support nurse and see if they run any ‘Life after Cancer’ courses or is there a Maggies Centre near you? The support desk on here is available 7 days a week from 8-8 if you want to chat about how you’re feeling? The number is 0808 808 00 00.

And of course we’re here if you need to offload or there’s a monthly ‘chat’ post where people just pass the time if day or post nice photos

    Hope some of this helps

    Take care
