Hi all,
I’m in brain cancer remission and have an annual scan every year. My Neurologist doesn’t want me to have any more MRI/CT scans as radiation can slightly increase cancer risk.
I had a colonoscopy at a different hospital recently but colon was too swollen to be checked all round so Gastro Dr wants to do a CT scan which includes low dose radiation.
I now have a predicament and don’t know whether to have the scan for colon issues/cancer (and increase the risk of this too) or not have the scan and what might be cancer in there will just keep growing.. I have asked my Neurologist for advice but whilst I wait it’s not a nice thing to be thinking about:-(
I‘ve been in this ‘which doctors advice should I take’ situation before and I did the right thing (I think!) but it’d be good to hear from others who have as well - tia x
It’s so difficult. I guess you need to find out how smaller risk . Does it have to be a ct scan ? Can you have an mri instead ?
I had two ct scans in 24 hours . Must admit it made me feel uneasy . Now they want me to have a third ( not for cancer)
Still can’t make my mind up . Hope you get to talk it through with someone soon . The waiting is the worse
I would approach a radiologist to seek their opinion . My rule of thumb is to always ask the Dr in that specialty . They have the knowledge on the most up and coming research in their particular field .
I am not sure if the neurologist is concerned for the brain area which I understand. My mum’s scans were always Of the chest and abdomen so not sure how that translates into exposure to the brain . My mum has actually had over 35 scans . These thoughts did concern us too along the way but felt for her there was not a lot of options .
You might like to phone our helpline staff 0808 808 0000. The nurses might have some insight into it .
Take care ,

Hi.
It’s a dilemma. My son is in the business of imaging. This happened as he had to change his career after a traumatic car accident. His file was thick of images. It’s ironic that now he images others
if it was me I would have to know. It would nag at me until I found a way of checking what’s going on.
You’ll be able to make the right choice for you once you have all the risks involved in having a scan on your colon.

Hi Wizbit I do understand your dilemma. I'm under 2 clinics in 2 hospitals. Bowel clinic wanted to do colonectomy and endoscope at hight of covid, I said no. My oncologist said tell them I said you don't need it, your scans are good in them areas. They kept on at me.
When covid calmed down I agreed to them, then they kept saying are you sure you want them !!!!!!!
Ask your nurses, oncologist, doctors, support group, but in the end it's your decision.
Take care, thinking of you
Thanks Sarah and it’ll be the 3rd CT in 5 years but the MRIs with the contrast dye will be about 7. Think I’m going to have to risk it
Thanks Darcyolly and yes it’s the not knowing and the do I/don’t I things that are the hardest aren’t they. I think I’m going to do mine although will chase my neurologist for his ‘blessing’ as such - means if it’s a bad idea I know it wasn’t just mine…!
I hope things go well for you too, whatever you decide as well
