Hello everyone.

New here. i start my treatment next week and as a runner was hoping to try and keep running during treatment. Obviously it will all depend on how i react to the treatment and managing my expectations.

Any runners here ? Just wondering on their experiences

Thank you

  • Hi , not a runner myself but I managed to keep up HIIT exercises during treatment pretty much up until the end of the regime.  I found the side effects did get slightly worse as the chemo built up.  Just listened to my body and also got plenty of rest.  There are a few marathon runners on bowel cancer UK though.

  • Well that is  encouraging to hear you kept up HIIT exercises. Thank you

Yeah runner here Hi Aeson. All the advice I got was do it if you want to and when you don't want to, stop.

    Depends the type of treatment.

I had tablet-based chemo for bowel cancer.

If you have introvenus then will be a diff experience.

I was also having radio to my backside.

The tablets, I describe, as slow creep - you barely notice they are making you tired - but your family will notice before you. Eg: reading the kids bedtime stories I'd drop off and talk nonsense without noticing.

Just listen to your body then your mind in that order.

Do it with a smile and obvs don't worry about times.

When you decide to stop find something else, I learned the rubik's cube lol but you know what I mean, anything you fancy. I am four years since my treatment and can promise you that to stay positive will make you happy in four years time too. Obvs we'd never choose to go through this but if I think back I genuinally have positive memories because I treated it all as my job. Head down get it done. Plenty of tears, that's as important as being positive in my book. Both in equal measure.

Good luck with it. Let me know how you get on, I am on Strava if you fancy getting in touch. And funniest thing is today I did my first run since I was all done and dusted - not because I couldn't run, I chose other more indulgent hobbies - actually, after my op I did a 10k to prove I could, then decided to be lazy for two years Slight smile

  • Hi Aeson….I ran about 2/3 times a week before I started chemo radiotherapy but opted for cycling and walking during my treatment to maintain  fitness, get fresh air and keep me mentally positive . It helped with energy levels without overdoing it. Everyone experiences different effects so listen to your body and take each day at a time.

  • I could always use some more strava friends Slight smile

  • Thanks Catz321 Will do.

  • Hi Aeson, my plan was definitely to keep running if I could but I've not done it so far as a couple of things have got in the way.  I've had one round of CAPOX and a) the soles of my feet are quite red and tender and peeling very slightly so nurse said to cut back on walking and running would make it worse. b) my white blood cells have dipped very low (so low that my treatment has been postponed by two weeks so far) this means my immune system is compromised so I am a bit tired so saving my energy for walking. I am getting a lower dose next time so that might mean I am more able to run. Think you'll know yourself if you are up for it or not. Good luck with the treatment.

  • Thanks Lizzieannie. WIll be starting my first round of CAPOX Friday. Will listen to my body. Hope your white bloods levels return. Good luck with the lower dose.

  • Thanks Aeson, fingers crossed I get going with cycle 2 this week.
