Hello everyone.

New here. i start my treatment next week and as a runner was hoping to try and keep running during treatment. Obviously it will all depend on how i react to the treatment and managing my expectations.

Any runners here ? Just wondering on their experiences

Thank you

  • In australia mild exercise is part of the chemo suite "experiance" makes the chemo more effective apparently

  • Me, me, me!  And I was thinking of posting a running thread to talk about this stuff.  Thanks for saving me the effort!

I stopped running in Nov 2020 due to spine mobility issues (eventually found a good physio and she fixed me!) and a hiatus hernia.  After the physio I picked running up again. However, I had problems running with the hernia aka run a mile, coughing fit and puke-up (one of the symptoms why I stopped running).  However now on better drugs for the hernia and I was up to 30 mins run before the covid booster and my kidney biopsy.  Now need to re-try and see where I'm at.

I start my metastatic ccRCC (nivolumab-ipilimumab) mid Jan.

I feel lethargic (+heavy legs) on some days which has made it hard to go out.  But today I've been shopping with my daughter.  It was great and I feel much better, so mind-over-matter definitely appropriate!  Just do it as the slogan goes.   I'm feeling the cold more than BC so I'm wearing at least 1 extra layer running than what I used to.   I need to get out and run before Jan 18th to get into a rhythm  to have something to compare to, post treatment.

I have a target to get back to my running club for social reasons, but I'm not sure what's possible as we do a lot of intensity running and sometimes sessions that are linear, so there is a keep-up requirement, even if there are fast/medium/slow paced groups.  Plus I want some privacy over my health conditions - I can't bear people displaying pitty for me, or any BBsit behaviours.

Let's just say it's a work-in-progress.  I'm gonna look for you guys on Strava now!

Aeson - how are you getting on with (a) treatment and (b) running?

  • HI Claire

Good to have a target ! I moved home and did join a running club but never went on any runs because of Covid. Then Cancer happened and now I have moved my target to run and be happy

Currently in 3rd cycle of 4 (Then radio/surgery/more chemo)  And I have managed to keep running on the 2nd weeks of the cycle which is good. So far so good.

  • Also important to point out i started with walking. If i could not run or felt crap or sick would try and go for a walk. I found this hard because all i wanted to do it run but stuck with it and tried to get into a positive mindset that this would lead to running.

    1. Im running with my partner which helps…not far and normally on dry days which I enjoy … I don’t push myself too hard or far and feel the benefit physically and mentally.  Other days I just walk briskly… love a hill or two. I know I’m not at the fitness level I used to be or even in the best shape I was but the little I do keeps me going at the moment. I am having surgery in 10 days and told recovery is about 4-6 weeks so next week I will try walk every day if I don’t feel like a run. I hope to do the Great North Run half marathon in September. I have s planned focus which I think helps…something to work towards.
  • sorry… meant to say hello to everyone. You posts help immensely through this tough journey, thank you for sharing x
