Had meeting with surgeon today, hubby needs a permanent stoma. It's a bit of a shock cause 3 weeks ago we were oblivious to all this. Operation scheduled for 3-4 weeks. Nedd as much info as possible as what to expect. Thanks

Thankyou Karen,  I never expected that answer.

  • Apologies if it was a bit blunt/graphic. I’ve attached a link about the operation - it briefly describes the APR - but is quite good for giving ideas about what to take to hospital, what to expect during and after etc.

If you type APR in the search box at the top of the page then you can have a look at some of the previous posts?

    Take care

    Karen x

Hi Karen, it went good thanks, we are a lot more prepared in a way what to expect, she brought bags and a dummy stoma so dave could stick it on and fix a bag to it. Just a bit scary that I can not visit him in hospital and not be there for him and the stoma nurses only work Monday to Friday, so if he comes home for weekend we on our own for a couple of days.

  • Glad it went well . If his ops on Monday then the nurses will probably visit him daily until his discharge. It was actually one of the ward nurses who watched me change my first bag and then I wrote down what to do! It will be hard for you both with no visiting but hopefully it will only be a short stay and he’ll soon be back home x

Hi , I have had a stoma for 6 months, you get used to it .I have amazing team of stoma nurses to help and never think that any questions are daft , it’s a life changer having cancer and throw in a sJoyma too ! With mine i eat wtever I want, early days they told me to be careful with thing’s that can cause blockage, again a stoma nurse should advise, you get booklets to read and don’t go too much Joyto dark internet.. stick to sources like this . And you will be surprised how many people have stomas lol ,I’ve never hidden the fact I have one .. it’s saved my life and she’s called senga Joy just to add a little humour , but take it day at a time , it’s shock and every day at beginning brings more information, remember knowledge is power

    all the best

  • I’m six weeks and honestly it really doesn’t take long to adjust to sorting it out. what hit me was the blockage I had was really causing me to have no life, I was in continually because I needed to be near the loo, everything I ate I needed to make sure that I would be able to process it..

At least now that has gone and with it the cancer.

    Good luck

    with very best wishes
