Hi my husband is 47 and recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer, which has spread to his liver and destroyed it. He has been unwell for 18 months but due to gps and hospital appointments being cancelled his cancer was missed and as a result is now terminal. He was in hospital for 12 days and they built his strength up so he could have a biopsy and we are getting results tomorrow but oncologist is not hopeful of any treatment being available. Since coming home he has not eaten anything solid just Fortesip shakes, he is so weak I feel like he has given up and I dont know how to help him. I feel useless has anyone got any advice on how I can encourage him to eat. He was sent home with no care plan in place.

  • Hi

I am really sorry to read your husband has been sent home without the support he requires.

Can I suggest you might like to phone the helpline 0808 808 0000 as the nurses have a lot of experience with dietary issues or be able to tell you how to access the services required .

Your husband has had such a time of it that must be very difficult for you both .

My mums went through a spell where she could not face food and lost 3 stones . One of the things we found helpful was milk shakes . We added chocolate bars , ice cream and milk . It was a calorie overload but did the job . She only had to sip it over a long period of time whereas everything else she just could not face . Macdonald ones do the same job !

When it was possible we packed additionally calories in to make every bite  count . Cream or butter in mashed potatoes etc . A complete departure from the normal healthy diet . She struggled with the build up drinks too. But I found a complan one at Morrison’s health section that was chicken soup . With a slice of toast it was hitting over 400 calories but had all the nutrients required so I was comfortable if she achieved that . I kept it small and often as a meal was off putting but a wee biscuit and cheese etc she sometimes managed .

I think it’s such a genuine battle for them and such a hard situation for you .
But you most definitely need support from professional dieticians  and his needs to be assessed at home .

Our helpline team will be able to guide you through this .

Please feel free to ask anything .

    Take care ,

    Court
