Hi,a relative (42) has just been diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer, spread to liver. There are 5 tumours on her liver. Surgery is not an option as there is too much in the liver. A month of radio followed by 3 months of chemo. Has anyone else had a similar diagnosis?
Hi Eyoung
Welcome to the forum but sad to read about your relative .
Going straight to chemo is actually a good plan in shrinking the mets and reigning in microdisease although I fully appreciate it does not feel feel like it at the time .
If you click on my user name you can read how they have managed my mum’s disease . We thought she had two liver mets but it turned out to more and looked a bit like a fruit bowl in her liver so not a great start however they were contained within lobes 4 to 8 . Hearing she was inoperable was such a blow but with hindsight chemo was a powerful tool and not only shrank them but most disappeared off the scan . One thing we did find helpful after chemo was completed was actually going to a centre of excellence for the liver and speaking with the surgeons there . They are very proactive . You can identify the nearest one to your relative by googling liver transplant units as it’s the same surgeons .
The oncologists have taken really good care of my mum and worked in partnership with the surgeons where possible. She was initially diagnosed as a stage four patient back in 2009 .
For those unable to access surgery bowel cancer has several chemotherapy options which oncologist are able to use . New treatments have also been developed since my mum was diagnosed. It certainly not without hope !
But it’s frightening and takes time to find your feet with so I wish your relative all the very best and here’s to significant shrinkage . Apparently chemo works best with fast dividing cells if they are responsive and despite the size of the liver mets they actually imploded !
Hope your coping ok . Not easy watching a relative navigating such a difficult situation but a strong team and good care can make all the difference.
Take care ,
Court
