Hello, apologies if this sounds shallow but hey ho.  Stage 3 bowel cancer, tumour removed, stoma inserted, chemotherapy  underway and struggling and in between that look like an old hag.  Any advice re hair dye for grey as I can’t cope with this until xmas. Thankyou.

  • Hi, I know how you feel . I finished my chemo in January . I didn’t use a colour whilst on it but as soon as I finished I used a colour ( non permanent from Holland and barret ) since then I have used a permanent and my hair was okay . I didn’t loose any on chemo and it’s very thick so I took a risk . Maybe do a patch test first . XX

  • Definitely not shallow!!!! X I haven’t started chemo yet but dreading  the whole grey hair business .

    Hi,

I know exactly what you mean! I have not had my hair coloured for 12 months what with 2 lots of chemo and lockdown. Everyone says it looks lovey grey but I cannot stand it,

I didn't lose any hair during chemo but the texture totally changed, it became very fragile and it is now really straight whereas before it was quite curly.

I didn't dare use a colour at home so I have held on and I am finally having a colour at my hairdressers on !3th and I literally can't wait.

When I spoke to my hairdresser she said the advice was 6 months after chemo, I suppose with lockdown and being able to wear hats when going out during the winter I have managed. But I am back at work after Easter and I don't want to scare anyone.Stuck out tongue winking eye

I would definitely get advice from a professional before you attempt to do it yourself, as I don't think they would do it in a salon tbh.

    Take care xx

  • Hi Ags68,

it was at the beginning of round 2 the nurse told me not to be dyeing my hair because it would already be compromised, so I’m afraid I’m stuck with ol’ granny grey roots until it’s all over... One of the prices I have to pay I think because I don’t want to risk taking a chance :-/

I start chemo on Tuesday and I’ve just had blonde highlights in just to make me feel better x

  • Thankyou all, I’ve got an appointment with my hairdresser next week hurrah she is investigating options, looks like that bobble will be used a lot Grinning

  • Hi all. This subject has been covered a lot on the Bowel cancer uk site and people have used natural and vegan dyes but it’s always a risk. My hairdresser said she could colour my hair but stay away from the roots but it depends on where you get your greys - I tend to find them lurking at the sides and in my fringe. As an interim measure I’ve used Garner re-Touch which might be ok for touching up roots and small areas? It comes in different shades and is just like a little sponge that you dab on where needed x

  • Hi Ags68, have you thought about a pink or purple shampoo. I let my hair go grey before I had cancer I just put a purple shampoo on it , people think I’ve coloured my hair. A couple of my friends went pink. X

  • Hi

I had my hair cut short and went grey during chemotherapy. I admit to putting my makeup ( my face as I called it ) on every day it made me feel better even though not really going anywhere. Being grey is only temporary and if you get a good cut it is also quite fashionable.

    take care
