Hi All,

I hope this isn’t a daft question - asking for my husband who wants to get things right for my post-op recovery at home, bless him! I’m having a keyhole anterior resection on April 21st. Has anyone who’s had this op been advised by the medical team not to climb stairs for a while? I’m inclined to think it will be fine but hubby’s thinking he should set up a bed downstairs for me initially.

  • Hi . I was fine climbing stairs although was glad of the bannister in the early days. Hubby slept in the spare room for a couple of weeks initially as I felt anxious that he would throw a leg across me in the night and my stoma bag would explode! I found it handy to have a cushion in the car to sit on and I also put one over my tummy for comfort. Getting out of bed it is better to move gently onto your side then raise yourself up using your arm.

I bought a little fold up table which I had next to my chair so everything was to hand. You’ll be advised to not lift anything heavy for at least 6 weeks so might be worth getting him used to the Hoover now!

    Take care

Thanks so much for your advice, Karen62!

  • Hi @ shwmae the physio team were on the ward after my op to help get me out of bed and try me out on climbing the stairs . I had keyhole and felt fine climbing the stairs . I’m on my 3rd week post op and and moving around a little bit more and therefore my tum does get a heavy feeling . Bit initially I’d come down stairs in the morning for breakfast head back up to get washed the. Back downstairs till bedtime . I found I had to lay on my back in bed and still do . But I also needed Hubby to help me up out of bed as I missed the bed hand rails for support . I do t think you’ll need a bed downstairs

Ah, thank you . Seems I won’t need a bed downstairs then - good, I didn’t really fancy that. I’m a creature of habit and upstairs is for sleeping, downstairs for getting on with the day Blush

  • I agree lol but take it really really slowly x

Hi, I’m exactly 4 weeks post op for LAR and whilst I was in hospital I had a visit by the physio team who walked me up and down the stairs but it was very easy, and since coming home don’t even think about stairs now. Xx

  • , I have 28 steps to go down to get to the house, or out again! The physios will make sure you are stable and able to cope with steps before you leave. Providing your stairs are not the really old fashioned really steep things, I expect you will be fine. Take care.
