My husband has recurrent rectal cancer in the presacral space ..from his original operation he had an anastomastic leak which led to a collection that had to be drained ..the anastomosis healed ...since his second diagnosis he has been admitted with sepsis on many occasions due to a collection that led to his urtethral pipes being damaged and now has stents ..please can anyone explain what the collection is and where it is coming from 2 years post op .

  • Hi

That sounds really rough . He has had a lot of post op complications . I honestly don’t know how these collections of fluids build up . Has his surgeon mentioned them ? I know with my mum’s scans , if you click my user name you will see she has had some invasive surgeries, show collections of fluids but they seem to have occupied displaced spaces let after surgery. However none of my mum’s have never caused any issues , damage or infection and I don’t think they are from an anastomoses leak just gathered and not dispersed. Her CT scan mentions them as unchanged along with her hernia that sometimes has more fluid in it than others . It does sound as though there might be another reason for your husbands to gather . Our helpline staff might be able to find a better explanation on 0808 808 0000. I must admit if your husband was agreeable I would be inclined to email the surgeons secretary. I always feel better when I understand things too .

Does he have a treatment plan for his recurrence. It’s such a blow and we have faced a few as a family but hopefully they will have a good plan to bring his safely through this bump in the road .

    Take care ,

Thank you ..so from reading the collection is fluid so that reassures me a little ..he never fully recovered from his last op he had a transanal mesorectal excision and an ilieostomy ...they said all cancer had been removed such a relief but with readmissions for sepsis they told him cancer had returned ...plan was 6 lots of chemo he has a picc line ..scan and op to remove they also discovered he has the kras gene so targeted therapy as well ..they said good response but due to cancer attached to blood vessels and ligaments they couldnt risk operating so hes had 5 more lots of chemo and was admitted to hospital again 8 days ago due to urosepsis and scan showed another collection ..damage to urethral pipes where he had stents both infected and they wanted to put a bilateral nephrostomy in he has had so many holes and tubes he declined he has a stoma a picc line and they wanted to put another tube how is he supposed to sleep when he has tubes and bags on both sides of his body ? Anyway today he has had stents changed and collection drained a blood transfusion and iv antibiotics so hopefully he will feel better and be home soon we then await scan and mdt decision as to where we go next hope you and your mum are well take care ..
