Dear Cranagh
I started to respond to you but made a hash of it.
Wanted to explain a little about this process. There are lots of reasons why doctors need to use a sigmoidoscopy to help them diagnose a problem in our bum. So they use a tiny camera which they insert in our bottoms, after giving us a local anaesthetic so you won’t feel any pain.
There’s quite a range of conditions that give rise to similar symptoms, and most of these conditions are very mild. Of course we are all worried that it might be serious, and that includes the possibility of cancer. I’m sorry you have to go through this test, and hope very much that the diagnosis will be of an easily treatable problem.
The test itself is a bit of an intrusion into our privacy but not of itself something to be feared. I have learned the hard way that it’s better to know than to remain unknowing. This is a brilliant support group should you need that. But it’s unlikely - I hope you will find peace, and perhaps a focus on the beauty of Spring might help you.
I’m so sorry not to have replied before Cranagh. Our pain response is unique to us, so please let the doctors know how it was last time and they should offer an option that will ensure it’s pain free. Relaxing would help, not easy when you’ve had one bad experience already. And if gas and air has been helpful at other times, no harm in asking.
Hi there, i had a sigmoidoscopy in 2017. I was not offered any sedative or any gas and air. It was painful. If I ever had it again I would request sedation and lots of gas and air. There is no point being in pain.
I had a colonoscopy in 2019 - lots of sedation and it was fine.
don’t put up with pain - ask for pain relief and lots of it.
take care
paula
