6 months after hemicolectomy - trapped air pains/pressure. Anyone else have this?

Hi all

Hope everyone is doing as well as possible.

I had a right hemicolectomy at the end of January 2020. All went well and I had my second 3 month stint of chemo after which I finished in June. All through I have had a feeling of pressure/air underneath my right lung and sharp pains too around my torso which feel like trapped air. No one seemed too worried when I mentioned this and my last CT scan in June was clear.

I am wondering if anybody else has had similar symptoms even this long after the op? Of late it has seemed a little worse. It feels like I’ve got air trapped up my back and right shoulder blade and I get a feeling of pressure where I imagine the ‘join’ is in my bowel. Sometimes sharp nerve pain there too. The sharp pains have continued as well. I get bloating and tummy growls at times. Is this fairly normal after 6 months? I keep reading about people who have gone back to normal after op and worrying that I haven’t.

I rang the bowel nurses who said to keep an eye on it - but didn’t really have any answers. I am due to have a colonoscopy in Sept but there is a backlog because of COVID so waiting for appt.

Still getting used to being post treatment and finding this trapped air/pressure hard to take. Hopefully nothing to worry about. Have had a fissure too which I posted about before!

Keen to hear from anyone else who has had similar experience anyway!

Cheers

David

  • Hi David,

I've not experienced this personally as it is my husband who is going through treatment just now, but he had the same op at the end of June. He gets a few abdominal pains here and there but not as much as you describe. I'd suggest speaking to your cancer specialist nurse or you can ask a nurse on this site. I hope you get some answers soon! Lorna x

  • Hi ,

My mum had a right Side ascending resection .
She did have a lot of odd pains and we considered adhesions after a while . The gurgling sounds persisted for years and I could hear them quite clearly . We would end up having to laugh as they were really loud . Strangle enough they are no longer like that or as intense . Not sure why and never got to the root of the problem to be honest . However her bowel was functioning well but we kept an eye out for signs of blockage .
Always worth passing by your team or GP . Or our helpline staff maybe able to answer your concern .

    take care ,

Hi I had a resection back in march and also have this odd feeling below my right rib it feels as if I've been stitched up  to tightly and is worse some days than others I have been examined numerous times but just told not to worry but it's such an annoying sensation sometime it feels as if there is a golf ball in there  but I'm trying not to worry about it

Thanks, Lorna! It is a big op isn’t it. I think it is my system and trapped air around the join. Might try to speak to a Macmillan nurse about it like you suggest. Best wishes to your husband for his treatment - we are all in this together!

Thanks, Court! That’s reassuring to know. I think it could well be adhesions and just trapped air as my system is still settling down. Will keep an eye on things and try the helpline too - that’s a good idea. Best wishes to your Mum!

Hi Katy! Thank you! Reassuring to know it’s not just me then! I think we are always so on edge that any pain/discomfort gets us worrying, but I guess it would be strange to have such major surgery and not have some strange after effects/sensations. I know what you mean about the golf ball sensation. Mine aches too but it’s not always there and I’m trying to ignore it. It seems worse a while after I’ve eaten sometimes. Hope you’re doing well and have been able to enjoy the summer a bit after the op.
