Hi everyone,

Well I think I’m ready to post on here now. Here’s my story so far...

Bleeding, lumps and discomfort last summer so went to see the doctor, he said (without any exam- just a little look) it’s haemorrhoids, gave me suppositories and off I went, no improvement, went back, given more suppositories, still no change so eventually he referred me routinely to hospital for treatment, this was in November. January I’d still not heard from the hospital so rang up and found waiting time to be 9 months.

Had a niggle in the back of mind that I couldn’t shift (based on the blood colour) so decided to go private for a consultation to put my mind at rest, the best £150 I’ve ever spent, had a digital exam and a rigid sigmoidoscopy to be told it was not haemorrhoids but a malignant tumour.

He said it was probably about an inch, likely to have been there for a couple of years but couldn’t tell if it was rectal or anal at that point.

This was only a week ago, I was referred back to NHS with the same consultant as he saw I was self funded.

Had a colonoscopy yesterday which confirmed a low rectal tumour but rest of the bowel was fine. Phew!

I’m thinking that if it’s not spread to anywhere else in the bowel then it’s unlikely to have spread anywhere else (hope my rationale is right!)

I’ve got a CT scan this Thursday, an MRI next Sunday then my consultant appointment for all of the results is 2nd March in the afternoon.

Husband and family have been amazing, although I think they’ve taken it worse than me! I told my 4 children (12,13,18 and 19) I was very open and honest but was very careful not to scare them.

I just want to know the extent of everything now, and start fighting this thing, the consultant originally said it would likely be radiotherapy and surgery.

Being only 42, I never thought this was even likely so it has been a rollercoaster of emotions but I’m feeling very positive!

Anyone else have a similar story? Would be interested to hear from you!

Thanks

Lisa

  • Hi Kev what a fantastic result! I’m so pleased for you! You’ve certainly had an eventful journey for your biography!

Fortunately my husband’s friend had nothing sinister but a form of colitis.

Take care, stay safe and well and thank you for sharing your journey!

    All the best

    Hannah

  • Hi Hannah,

Glad your husbands friend has got nothing too serious and hopefully he will get the treatment he needs quickly to sort the problem.

Thanks for your kind comments and encouragement and I’ll keep here updated when I have some news. We are just hoping we can have some sort of family time at Christmas no matter how short that may be. We are fortunate enough that we have pretty much got our Christmas shopping done presents wise.

    Hope you are keeping well

    Kind Regards

  • Thank you Kev, please do update us on here! Fingers crossed for some family time this Christmas for us all! Will be the first year I’ve not spent a Christmas with my son as he lives in Hong Kong and restrictions will permit him coming home This time, but thank goodness for Facetime! Well done for sorting your xmas shopping!

  • Thank you Hannah, I have just finished off my bio.

It’s getting up windy here currently.

  • Hi All,

I should have had an MRI and CT scans in March along with a flexible sigmoidoscopy. These were delayed probably due to the pandemic. I have had all 3 now with the flexible sigmoidoscopy last Wednesday which the doctor was happy that there was no sign of reoccurrence. I took the opportunity to ask about the scans which I eventually had 3/4 weeks ago. He had a look at my records and said that the MRI looked normal and that the CT scan showed no signs of reoccurrence either.

So it’s good news the last report and conversation I had with Professor Myint he indicated that if the scans that I have just had showed clear then they don’t do any more after 3 years but the camera examinations would continue for a further 2 years at 6 month intervals.

He did say that the longer it goes without any sign of reoccurrence then the percentage of it coming back goes down too.

I am generally settled down now with the toilet visits too with 99% of the time only going once a day  usually within 30 minutes of getting up. The only problems I am having is a bit of soreness from time to time when passing a motion. But otherwise I am pretty much back to normal.

I am concentrating on keeping fit with visiting the gym 4 times a week and I have an exercise bike at home that I go on 2 to 3 times a week. As well as physically trying to keep fit. I find it good for my mental health.

It’s good to be in the gym even with the coronavirus precautions as I am chatting to people which is a blessing after what we all have had to endure with the lockdowns.

My next appointment is with Professor Myint in September although it is currently set up to be a telephone appointment but I suppose it will depend on what is happening with the virus. If things ease enough it may get converted into a physical appointment.

    Kind Regards

  • Hi Kev

What wonderful news to hear! I’m so pleased it’s gone well for you even with the delays. Its a good job your treatment started before COVID-19! It’s been a long journey for you but it looks light there is light at the end of of tunnel and your treatment path was certainly the right one!

    Best wishes

    Hannah

  • So , so good to see you posting ! Delighted to read your good news once again !  That’s just excellent!

You definitely made the right call with your treatment!

I have just seen your post on another thread ! Macmillan went onto a new platform and it did take a bit of getting used to however since it did it the numbers of people contributing for the first time popped up and I can testify to that as I can be on for quite a bit of time each day . Just thinking though as your thread to me is really important  for others to read ! I think I will bookmark it then if you can’t find it I will have it at hand ! As there is quite a volume of posts now !

I too had difficulty finding your thread as I had wanted to ask you something . Recently I wanted to share Papillion with a lady who was not deemed suitable for surgery . There used to be nice guidelines and I thought they mentioned this group of people specifically. I know things change and I don’t want to give out dates information. You have more knowledge on these things than me and wondered if you had any information on the current guidelines for Papillion therapy or if it was covid affecting things ?

Anyway once again great to hear from you and your fitness level is impressive. My youngest son has worked out throughout lockdown for a couple of hours each day . He is away paddle boarding just now complaining that his wet suit has shrunk !

  • Hi Court I’m well and thank you for asking, hope you and yours are too! The Family is well thank you but my Father’s health has gone down hill since we lost mum, it’s over two and half years now would you believe, we still miss her terribly. He has had a skin cancer but thankfully that has all been successfully removed. Hopefully results from blood tests may help with his other problems. I’ve not been on the forum lately so I hope all is well with your mum!

    Best wishes Hannah

  • Hi

I can hardly believe it’s been 2 1/2 years since you lost your mum ! I am sure you miss her greatly . I noticed a change during lockdown with both my parents health but seem to be doing a bit better now . I hope your dads health improves. It’s so harsh on them when they have had such a loving spouse .

It only took mum 12 years but she got discharged from oncology! She has other health issues now but to hear “cured” was a sweet moment !
Still it’s lovely to here from people who previously used the site and to hear how they are getting on !

    Take special care ,
