A bit of background first:
I was diagnosed in September 2021 following a positive FIT test and colonoscopy. Followed by a CT scan in October 2021, which showed no spread. Surgery followed on 12 November that year (Lower Anterior Resection with loop ileostomy).
I had my histology results in early December 2021. These confirmed a Stage 3 disgnosis, with 11/33 lymph nodes positive and EMVI positive. The treatment plan was 12 cycles of adjuvent chemotherapy with FOLFOX. This started in early January 2022.
I had a PICC line fitted which made the treatment delivery a breeze. The line was in for 7 months without any issues. Due to side-effects of peripheral neuropathy in hands and feet (from which I still suffer to a degree) the Oxalaplatin dose was reduced after cycle 5 and stopped totally after cycle 9. The Fu5 was continued.
My loop ileostomy was successfully reversed in May 2023 and after 9/12 months regained new normal bowel control. I eat and drink whatever I fancy.
I have been monitored for recurrence with CEA blood tests, CT scans and colonoscopies at regular intervals until my last colonoscopy today. WHICH HAS BEEN CLEAR AND THE REPORT SAYING NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED.
So that’s it, a cancer journey successfully negotiated. To those starting out, or part way through, with all the attendant worries, it can be done.
All the staff involved, from start to finish, especially those in the darkest days of COVID-19, have been fantastic, and have my deepest admiration.
If I have any advice it is trust the professionals, do as you are told, and try and get your head around the psychological aspects as quickly as possible. All things will pass.
