Hello, my husband has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer does anybody know anything about the KRAS G 12V gene if so could you please explain it to me

Thank you

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . I am probably not intelligent enough to fully explain this . But my understanding is that a sub group of bowel cancer patients have this mutation in the cells . It classed as a driver and I think long story short encourages the cells to grow quicker .

Can I just say that you need to be careful what you read on line at the moment regarding this as a lot of research has been ongoing into to mutations in recent years . I was just reading the other day that research is currently emerging regarding this mutation for different treatment approaches . So if you do read up on it check the date on each article as it may already be outdated .

Over covid we saw a change in practice for a different mutation to your husband but it opened up another treatment arm which was proving very successful .

When my mum was first diagnosed back in 2009 everyone got the same treatment . That went on for years but around five years ago things changed and you could see more tailored approaches coming through more targeted at people’s mutations .

My mum was Kras wild . A different one .

Has your husband started treatment ?

  • Hi Court, tbh I am glad you mentioned about online I did look a little, I was very concerned about the other name they call it " death star " now I doubt it quiet a stressful read, but to be Frank it says they have been doing research on this fir a number of years and it looks promising, my husband has had 4 cycles of folfox but has had to stop as he is getting recurrence of abcesses and is having to have drains put in to drain them, so no chemo until the drains are removed,we have a appointment with oncology tomorrow in the afternoon as this is the first time I have seen this on his letters I will see what the oncologist has to say, but thank you for you reply x

  • Hi

It’s easy to scare yourself silly with some articles . I did it many times . Then my husband would have a look and put it into context . They do seem to be getting some good results and he is a stat of one . Only his own response matters ,

Hope he gets the drains out soon .
