My husband is going into hospital in the next couple days for his colostomy and removal of a cancerous tumour. We have read that people have cut up puppy training pads into squares to use along side the bag . But we don’t understand what the concept is any ideas ?
Hi Chezza123
having had an unexpected colostomy in the last six weeks I would suggest it’s to protect against unpleasant leaks. It takes a while (sometimes) to get the bag combo/set up right. I spent a lot of my time in hospital crying as I was unable to control my own poo. Puppy pads would potentially stop or getting through to clothes/bedding.
I have a system that’s working (for now) and it’s much easier to manage.
I hope they helps

Thankyou CerysM
Husband is going in tomorrow, we have chatted to the stoma nurses but forgot to ask them about this . We are so unsure how it’s going to be , but are positive that we have to make it work as we have no choice .
im glad that you are finding it easier, i guess as time goes on you manage it better .
wishing you all the very best .
Hi Chezza123
mu husband used puppy pads under the bed sheets for a couple of weeks when he first came back from hospital but I haven’t heard about cutting them up. He was about 6 weeks in hospital (different surgery to what your husbands having with longer hospital stay - don’t want to worry you!), and by the time he was home he rarely had leaks and when they happened he was able to catch the pretty much straight away. From memory he only had one colostomy leak when we were out with the others being small leaks at home and easily resolved. He’s nearly a year on now and I can’t remember the last time he had one…it really does get easier as everything settles down and you find the bags that work for him.
Thank you for replying,we have ordered some and now we have more idea as to how we use them . I’m sure we will sort it out , I’m very anxious for him . Thankyou for your positive feedback xx
