I'm feeling blessed today.

Had my first catch up with the consultant yesterday after my op just before Xmas.

He and the team are happy with my progress.

Then today, got a call from the hossie to book in the ink enema test to ensure where they connected my anus to my colon has sealed and working correctly, then on the waiting list for the reversal.

I asked how much they removed and he said about a foot worth, I didn't ask any more as I was surprised at how much.

I think I must live in a good area for how this appointment came about (Leeds area: St James Hospital).

This next appointment is next Friday (just waiting for official doc on NHS App.

Any hints or tips for this next appointment?

  • Hi  Ooh exciting times - I had to have chemo after my op so had my ileostomy for about 15 months! I seem to remember the test not taking very long. I think I had to lie on my side and they input some liquid with dye in while watching on a screen to make sure none of it leaks out. You are then sent to a little private bathroom to sit on a toilet as what goes in must come out - it is quite strange to be ‘using’ your bottom again. I would recommend you stay there for a good 10-20 minutes as you may think you’re done and then find that you’re not! I can’t remember if I was given any pads for my underwear or not (I had mine at either Halifax or Huddersfield) so take something with you just in case and a folded up towel for the journey home to be on the safe side!
It’s a reasonably small op and my surgeon said they like to do it as a little filler in-er in between the big ops. Take it easy on the food front for a few days afterwards - the bowel does not like being manhandled and you don’t want to get the dreaded ileus - with hindsight my post op Cornish pasty was not the best food choice!

Hope the test goes well and you get a date soon
