hello.

I was recently diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer and have been rushed through to keyhole anterior resection on 21st January. I was told on forums that it is a good idea and possible to get a copy of the mdt diagnosis and treatment plan. I asked the registrar who told me my diagnosis last week to email me a copy of the information. she said she would but I received nothing. Today a nurse called me for the pre-op assessment questionnaire and I asked about the diagnosis and treatment plan again and she said she would ask that I be sent a copy. Nothing has arrived though and I meet with the surgeon tomorrow morning at 9am and will have to sign consent forms etc. I would much rather do this after seeing what they have decided and why. does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

  • The surgeon will have access to all of your scan reports, MDT reports and clinical notes. If there is a hospital app, you might be able to access these yourself tonight. Otherwise, I would start the consultation tomorrow by letting the surgeon know you are feeling a bit in the dark. S/he should talk everything through with you. You are entitled to copies of everything, or most things (not sure about MDT reports tbh) but not all trusts are up to speed on this. I sometimes notes sent by post but usually have to ask in clinic and they print them off there and then.

  • thank you. I had a bad experience with my young major stroke after care and a lost ablation referral that delayed heart treatment for a year so I am not so trusting anymore.

  • You are wise to be proactive, things do sometimes go missing or go wrong so you are absolutely right to get copies of things. I always take detailed notes on telephone consultations which ate becoming increasingly common, or ask for copies if it’s face to face. BTW one of the reasons that clinics are slow at sending stuff out is that requests get passed to the consultants' secretaries and they often work part time and/or overloaded. I expect your report will turn up at some point!

  • Hi Loulabelle and Lenzie,

Agree with both of you in requesting all the copies of the MDT's and all the pre op meetings, I had some nurses and in fact a Dr saying why should I had received copies of the meetings before I  went to the appointment? Well is my own life we are discussing here and obviously I want to know everything.

100% agree with Loulabelle, I dint trust anyone... I am sorry if this offend some professionals but I only trust myself!

    Regards,

    Carlos

  • Hi, sorry to hear that you are going through this. I just wondered whether they sent a copy of the report/letter to your GP. If they did, you should be able to access a copy on the NHS app. I usually can access all letters on there before they arrive in the post.

good luck with getting it sorted and I wish you well on the 21st.

  • Thank you. Update. Surgeon shared it all with me today. I'm finding it hard that none of the medical professionals talk to me. I found out today via a digital test result that my MRI shows I have only one kidney! Surgeon never mentioned this in the morning. I found out in the afternoon. They'll probably find three spleens next. Was given medication with the instructions and side effects in Spanish. The nurse didn't seem to know why I'd even been prescribed this. And UCLH is a world class hospital apparently. Worrying.
