Krukenberg tumours

So, monday my colorectal nurse called and said that my surgeon wanted to see me 2 days later

Ive always been given good news over the phone so I was understandably worried

My surgeon told me I have bilateral krukenberg tumours and needed a pet scan to see if its spread. I know that they're rare, but what scares me more than anything is the poor prognosis.

She has said that I will need Cytoreduction surgery with HIPEC.

Im in bits, but I'm more worried about my daughter and partner, they've been through so much with me and they are both struggling with this news.

Has anyone else here had these tumours? I just need answers on prognosis and what i can do to help my family

  • Hi

We have had people with successful surgery for them . Hipec is a big surgery but some people do really well . My mum was a stage 4 patient for fifteen years and I think it pays to remember you are a statistic of one . Only your outcome matters .
My mums prognosis was grim initially but she responded very well to treatment . That bought her years of life .

You could use the search function ( little magnifying glass ) to find others with the same diagnosis .

You might also like to try bowel cancer U.K. .

They have a forum too .

    Take care ,

  • Hi BexyM

Sorry to hear what you going through.

I had a caecum tumour and bilateral Krukenberg tumours. I had cytoreductive surgery, with HIPEC. The surgery they did was right hemicolectomy & full hysterectomy. I also had Folfox chemo after the surgery.

I was diagnosed at the time as stage 4, that is 6 years ago. I have had subsequent surgeries (with HIPEC) & chemo. But I've just had all my scans - PET, MRI & CT and there is no visible disease...we curently planning our next trip abroad ;-). So just want to say, there is hope. And its really good that they are doing a PET and have offered you cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC. At the time I went to the Christie - they were not very keen on doing HIPEC on me, but from my research I had concluded I needed HIPEC. So I ended up at Basingstoke (Hampshire Clinic), who have done my surgeries and have been amazing.

Just on HIPEC - as you probably know, it is an internal chemo wash during surgery - it just means the surgery is slightly longer (about an hour), so nothing to be worried about.

My recovery from surgery went fine, everyone is different, but I've always been lucky to get out of hospital quicker than they said. Because I had a full hysterectomy, I went into surgical menopause - but that was well managed with some oestrogel.

In terms of prognosis, my surgeons were caggy - they gave me the survival stats but didn't want to really give me a personal prognosis. I therefore focused my energies on what I could do - there is some good research on the postive effects of exercise on metastatic colon cancer, so I started walking more. Which really helped my surgery recovery and mental health.

Wishing you all the very best.

  • Thank you so much for your message, its definitely given me a lot more hope and im glad you're doing well. I had a right hemicolectomy last year and it all went well, so im hoping this will too.

Im in perimenopause so im already on HRT, so im prepared for full menopause!!

I was hoping to have Hip surgery in the next couple of months, unfortunately thats been put on the back burner as this is more important, so exercise is hard for me, however I do like my armchair execises Blush

I'll be going to Basingstoke too, ive heard really good things about the team there so I know ill be in good hands.

I hope you enjoy your trip abroad and that all your scans stay clear Heart

  • Thanks x. The 'Basingstoke boys' are brilliant. I've just sent them a Xmas card telling them that. LOL. You in good hands! ThumbsupHeart
