I have the pump attached to picc after sitting for chemo on Day 1 and then it's removed late on Day 3. Today is Day 3. I notice the balloon doesn't seem to have shrunk at all. The top of the teat is still on level 4. I know it's non-linear but I think it's just not worked. I suppose the nurse will realise later. No point in my calling about it now.
Anyone else have these problems? I'm wondering if I should just not do the pump anymore, though it comes recommended by the oncologist. It seems to be quite unreliable. The first round I did two weeks ago it did empty, though I got terrible nausea on Day 11 I had to be admitted to the ward for IV (couldn't even keep down a sip of water).
So far I've not had a great time with this!
Hi
I've had the pump before - I've never had it not shrink at all like you describe. I did once have quite a bit left in it (I'd say about a quater) but the nurse had made an error when she put it on.
You didn't mention which chemo drug you getting through the pump, but I'm pressuming its 5FU. Another way to administer 5FU is as a tablet - called Capecitabine. Capecitabine is used quite a lot, maybe chat to your oncologist if that is suitable for you if you not liking the pump. In my instance, the oncologist said I could have either but he suggested we try the pump.
All the best!
I had this for one of my cycles - turns out the tube was twisted or I was lying on it when I slept. I presume you have a PICC or port.
For sickness ask about Emend/Aprepitant. It’s given as either an infusion 30 mins before chemo or in tablet form. It’s only prescribed for severe sickness but really helped me.
good luck x
