My dad was told in November he has bowel cancer he had a blockage on his bowel which was at 90% so he had to get a stent put in his bowel they said it looked like it had spread to his lungs and it was confirmed yesterday it has went to his lungs and it is also in his lymph nodes in his stomach my dad is 75 we were told yesterday that he can have intense chemotherapy but obviously the side affects could be bad or he could go for the minimum chemo tablet form which the doctor advised me would be best I am just looking to see if anyone has been in this situation who could help me with some information as I just don't know what will be best for my dad many thanks
Hi Karen
I am sorry to hear that your Dad's cancer has spread. Making decisions about treatment can be tough.
I had chemotherapy for my own cancer and it was not easy at times, however it was doable. The thing with chemo is that different people can have different experiences and there are so many different types and regimes. Whichever decision Dad makes it is important that he has all the information that he needs to be able to make the right decision for him. Has Dad got a cancer nurse specialist that could talk through the proposed treatments and answer any questions?
I am not sure which chemo Dad has been offered but I wonder whether it would be worth giving the Support Line a call and talking things through. They are there everyday from 8am-8pm.
Jane
