Hickman line / portacath

Morning everyone

I went to get my PICC line put in again after a three month break from treatment. Unfortunately after several attempts on both arms it was impossible, this would have been my fifth line (see my profile) and apparently my veins just kept going into spasm.

I am now on a waiting list for either a Hickman or portacath - whichever is quickest. Does anyone have any advice on either please ? The Hickman looks like it would be impossible to have a bath or shower ! I do like a bath most evenings and have a shower every morning I managed both quite well with the sleeve covering for my PICC line.

Thank you

  • Hi Caroline

I have a portacath - it was implanted 6 years ago and never had a problem. It sits just under the skin, they usually plcace them top right chest, below clavicle. I am very grateful for mine - I have had 3 sets of chemo done and also regular blood tests taken through it...very easy and very little risk of infection and becasue it is under the skin I can bathe/swim whatever I like. When they access it they put a small needle through the skin into the portacath - its not sore and takes half a minute. Initially my port was flushed (quick process) every 4 weeks. More recently, they've found its not necessary to flush ports so frequently - I now get it flushed about every 7-8weeks. But I understand some centres do even 12 weeks. My port has been brilliant, so would totally recommend, I love the very low infection risk, no worry with swimming etc and easy access  - to know exactly how it would be for you, maybe ask your team things like how often would it need to be flushed going forward, and will they use it for blood tests too, useful to know.

I also briefly had a PICC while in hospital (when I was in ICU they needed more access lines) - was very glad to get rid of the PICC, mine was in an akward position and of course made bathing a bit more problematic.

    I wish you well.

  • Thank you that's really helpful information and sounds like a good option.
