Hi, has anyone had bowel adhesions from the scarring of surgery and ended up having bowel obstruction, if so did this ever happen again and were you able to go on holiday?

  • Hi

Adhesions are so complicated aren’t they !

My mum had several abdominal surgeries and adhesions did trouble her for a bit but strangely enough after a few years they settled and she was never troubled by them again . At one point she even had to watch eating whilst she was out that she did not twist to talk to other friends . We had to place her in the middle etc . It did not obstruct completely though .

She traveled abroad afterwards and had no difficulty .

    Take care.

  • Many thanks for your reply. I ended up with full obstruction and in hospital for emergency surgery. After that I developed an infected Seroma which needed draining, it seems never ending!

  • It was not until I googled adhesions that I realised exactly why she was having difficulty and I could see why it causes obstructions . I remember her going on soft diets for a few days at a time when things got rough but she managed to get there .

That was a rough time for you and very frustrating when you want to get through it all and back on with your day to day life .

I hope it settles for you really soon .

  • Thank you for your reply’s, hopefully things will get better over the coming months, I’ve got a follow up appointment with the gastro team this month to hopefully put in plans for future care,

    Take care!

  • I had an adhesion bowel obstruction 2 years ago, about 3 months after surgery so it seemed pretty reasonable, although it was the worst pain I had ever experienced. (I actually swore in A&E and I’m usually very polite!) So I merrily got on with my life but two years later it happened again!!

I’m kicking myself as I could feel a tiny pinging pain in my tummy for about a week and I just ignored it but all of a sudden I was in an ambulance and I’ve been in hospital for a week only just tolerating soft food this morning. But if I get that pinging again I will quickly change to soft foods.

I can’t think of anything I’ve eaten or done that would have triggered the adhesion to block my bowel. It is scary to be back in hospital and horrible for my kids. With that unpredictability I have just sworn to be very regimented in self care.

I am going to try my upmost to never be in this position again. I’m going to try smaller portions, follow an anti inflammation diet, make extra care to chew more, just be better at thinking about what’s going in.

But to answer your question in the last two years I have been on lots of holidays and I still will but just be more careful with planning meals and activities

It’s not very fair is it?!

  • Thank you so much for your reply. Who do you get your insurance through as I am finding it difficult to get insurance.

Did you have surgery for the bowel obstruction or has it settled on its own?  I was left for a week on water only but it didn’t settle.

It has been worse recovering from the surgery for the blockage and then getting an infected Seroma. I constantly worry that it is going to happen again but there is nothing that you can do to prevent it.

Hope you are doing well and wish you a speedy recovery.

  • I had a right hemicolectomy at the beginning of August. I have had constipation rather than diarrhoea and have used Lactulose  and recently Laxido to keep my bowels moving.
For a long time the urge to poo woke me several times in the night and I had to keep getting up and trying until I was able to pass stools. I had to really strain before the poo would come  I passed stools mostly in the early hours every morning and then not for the rest of the day.

Recently I was worried about the constipation and wondered if I had a bowel blockage. I went to my GP and she prescribed Laxido. It has worked to soften my stools and I now pass them easily around 6am and then not again all day.

My big issue is that I am now getting a burning pain in my bowels which wakes me about two hours after I have gone to sleep and keeps coming and going all night. I don’t have this pain during the day. I wonder if the pain is connected to adhesions or scar tissue? I don’t have a blockage as I am able to pass a relatively large amount of poo every morning.

Has anyone else had this symptom? It is keeping me awake and also causing me lots of anxiety.

  • Hi

I can’t say that I have experienced a burning pain in my bowels, if you had a blockage the pain would be constant all the time, the pain you are experiencing could be due to the Laxido you take, you could try taking it at a different time or take half a sachet if you are taking a full one.

  • Hi  Hope you don’t mind me jumping in but wasn’t sure if you were aware of the travel insurance board which might hopefully help?

  • Yes I have had a look at the travel insurance board but also like to ask for recommendations if someone hasn’t had a problem getting insurance. I have been refused by Aviva and Post Office already.
