What happens next?

Hi all

I’m new to this forum. My mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the start of the year. We had hoped it was caught early and could be seen off with a few cycles of chemo. However at her first chemo session her consultant confirmed it had spread to the lymph nodes in her stomach and was inoperable, but that chemo could keep it at bay…

She also has the BRAF MSS mutation which means it’s particularly nasty and that she’s likely to need ongoing treatment and so any break from chemo is likely to be short.

She’s about to complete her 12th round of chemo and I’ve no idea what happens next. We’ve been focused on getting through the chemo itself.  I also get the sense that she doesn’t want to know and it’s taking everything one day at a time.  Her consultant is awesome, but again has not really discussed what happens next and I don’t like to ask in front of my mum - but I also know I can’t discuss her prognosis without her consent.

Does anyone have any advice on how to manage this?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi

Tricky one for you isn't it. Honestly, I think the consultant would tell you, if you find a way to take that person aside and explain that you don't want to ask in front of mum. There is a very high degree of care and empathy within cancer care and I wouldn't think this would be a problem, but we as outside observers cannot really say what happens next medically.

  • Thanks for replying. You’re right. I should reach out. Everyone’s care is different.
