I though everything was going well after right hemicolectomy operation on 1 July.

Nearly 5 weeks after op I become feverish and a small part of wound was red. Got worse so ended up at out of hours gp for antibiotics. Then wound burst open and all this puss came out. I likened it to waters breaking! Ended up back in hospital for a few days followed by daily visits for dressing changes for about 2 weeks. The infected area was about 6 inches down and then across. Fortunately hidden in my fat layers and hasn’t affected bowels..

Transferred to local nurse at doctors which is easier and thought was on right path. She measured hole and now only 6cm deep. However has now started leaking more so think infection back. Waiting for swab results which should come on Monday.

It has been confirmed as an ecoli infection which is a result from bowel operation. What they are surprised at is how long it took to show.

Anyone suffered from similar? Feel quite down with it all. I know it will take as long as it takes but just want to get back to normal now x

  • Hi  I didn’t have an infected wound but I had an infected fluid buildup inside where the rejoin had leaked (if you click on my name then you can see my timeline) They inserted a tube into my right buttock during a ct scan then they said they drained a lot of the fluid off and the rest would drain into a bag strapped to my leg. Unfortunately this seemed to take several weeks and it was very hard trying to sleep while lying on a thin tube. It was very disheartening as everything else seemed to have gone pretty smoothly up to that point.
I remember saying to my husband that I just wanted to get back to normal and it does get you down but all you can do is keep plodding on.
I hope the infection isn’t returning and the wound continues to heal

    Take care

  •   that sounds awful. At the height of my infection they did put a stoma bag on me to collect fluid but now just packing and dressings.
It is disheartening but as you say got to keep plodding on x
