I had my right hemicolectomy on Tuesday 1st July. All went well except it was attached to more things than surgeon expected so longer operation. Needed a 4-5 inch cut to get tumour out which is more than normal. Struggled to get my bowels working again which caused sickness. Had a ct scan as I was panicked there was a blockage. All good so in ended up having an enema. Not a pleasant experience to say the least but now sorted. Still struggling with nausea but now on anti sickness drugs. I came home on Monday. I feel I have been to hell and back but I can say I do feel good today. Not in much pain but keeping up paracetamol levels. Just need to start eating more. Now need to wait on results. Meet up with surgeon again on 25th.

  • Hi  and congratulations on getting the surgery out of the way. Yes the bowel does not like being manhandled and tends to sulk for a few days which causes ileus (vomiting) so it’s good to hear that you’ve got over that and are back home.

Keep up with the paracetamol for a few days yet - as they say, don’t chase the pain - and try a few short walks when you feel up to it. It’s a good idea to follow a low residue diet for a week or so then reintroduce your normal foods.

Good luck with the results on the 25th

  • Hi glad to hear you are over the worst fingers crossed. Did you have keyhole surgery? My husband is booked in for his at the end of the month so I am interested in reading people's experiences.  Wishing you a good recovery and good results.

  • The whole operation was done keyhole but they have to make a larger cut to get out the colon. I think usually it is only a couple on inches around belly button. My cut is larger, 4-5 inches as needed to be, to get the thing out. Generally not in too much pain now and can move about ok. Wishing your husband well.
