Hi all
I will be starting FOLFOX treatment and will be having the port fitted in the next week or so.
I have a real phobia about needles (my veins are very thin and literally close up when a needle approaches), and the anaesthetic room experience when I had my hemicolectomy 6 weeks ago has literally scarred me for life, so the prospect of having this procedure to fit the port is making me anxious.
Does anyone have any experience of fitting, and living with a port they could share please?
Sending love and hugs to all on their journey xx
I had a port fitted in Oct 2023 and I still have it.
I was given anesthesia for a very short procedure. That means they will need to start an IV. Ask them to use the ultrasound device for finding veins. It is much better for people with bad veins. Scratch yourself in a different area of the body when they are poking you. The brain is easily confused and overwhelmed by signals. It lessens the discomfort of the needle.
The port fitting itself was no big deal. My chest was a little sore for about a week but it wasn't bad.
When they give you infusions through your port, they will need to access it by sticking a needle in it. It hurts when they do that. I was given lidocaine cream to use prior to the access.
The good news is that it is better than getting an IV. It is much more comfortable. Once the needle is in you don't feel it at all. There's no soreness or having to be careful how you move or any of that. I'd 100% rather have stuff through my port than an IV.
Good luck!!
Ask anything.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I really do appreciate it. You have put my mind at ease about the port, and yes, I think it will be much better than having a canula every time I need my infusions.
I will definitely try the scratching technique when I’m being approached by a needle - great idea!
All the very best to you, and again, thank you for your support.
