So I had a call back from one of the MacMillan nurses at the hospital. The MDT had a meeting on Friday and the appointment I have on 10th June isn’t for surgery, it’s an appointment to meet the surgeon and to discuss my surgery and treatment plan.
The nurse said my biopsy results confirmed my tumour is cancerous. It’s called a Adenocarcinoma. Good news is that the CT scan shows that it hasn’t spread and is contained in my colon (I know I have to wait for histology following surgery but I’m trying to stay positive).
I don’t know what stage it is or anything yet, I’m assuming I will get this at my appointment. Hoping I don’t have to wait too long for surgery as it’s so scary knowing it’s still inside me when I just want it out.
Hope you’re all doing ok, I’m really glad I joined this forum. The support from people who have gone through/are going through this is invaluable x
Hi Lulu13 have been thinking about you and hoping you had heard back. I’m glad you have got some positive news to some extent - even if you know it’s malignant, I found when they confirm it, it is still a shock and surreal hearing it out loud. I had the same type of tumour and others may correct me but I think it is a common type. I didn’t get the stage of mine until histology ( after the op) and that’s when they told me about lymph nodes being affected. I was also panicking that it was growing fast and I just wanted it out but was told they are slow growing so try not to let that worry you. It’s very positive that it’s not spread and I hope having some news has put your mind at ease slightly - although I know it’s still hard to wait on the consultant appointment etc. Best of luck for the 10th. Remember to write down a list of questions and take a notebook as you might forget what you wanted to ask! Take care xx
Hi Ki21,
How are you? Hope your treatment is going well and the side effects are more manageable.
They were already certain it was cancer following my colonoscopy but you can’t help but hope they’re wrong. I found the hardest part was telling my children and actually saying it out loud.
Yes the nurse said it’s a common type of cancer and it’s treatable.
Thanks, I’ll try not to worry. Got to try and stay positive.
I do feel better knowing what I’m dealing with now and the next appointment can’t come soon enough.
Great idea about writing a list of questions, thank you. I will go prepared.
Take care xx
Hi Lulu13 that's great news it is contained. A big relief. You have every reason to keep positive. Mine was initially staged via scans, then adjusted post histology as a few lymph nodes were affected.
The main thing is you have a plan. Take things as they come. Good luck for the meeting. I waited a month for surgery and like you wanted it gone! But bowel cancers are slow growing and it really won't make a difference. If there is any risk your team will be on it.
Hope you can feel a little easier now.
Any questions just ask xx
Hi again Lulu13 and that makes perfect sense now, that June 10th was meet the surgeon-who will explain what precisely is involved .
As you realise, lots of us have been down this road. We have a ton of experience to share, here. There are some big positives for you-No spread; that's a huge plus. Surgery as a first line of treatment is also a big positive because of all the ways cancer can be treated, the method by which a total cure is best achieved is by cutting the cancer out. The histology that will follow a few weeks after the operation may be good or not so good but in my case, like others, it found evidence of cancer in a lymph node and a vein which is why I then had chemo (after initially being told the Op had effectively 'cured' me)
You're in safe hands Lulu, and you have access to a massive amount of free advice acquired from experience , from the people on here-so be hopeful and be brave because you will get through this
Hi Lulu13 thats good that you’ve heard back & your appointment is to see the consultant only.
our experience after scans/biopsies etc was to see the surgeon who explained the stage of the cancer and what treatment they would recommend. In my OH’s case he needed radiotherapy + chemo first (5 weeks of daily RT) and 4rounds of CAPOX Chemo. Before any surgery - next appointment is with oncologist to see if treatment has worked. So yes everyone is different and take everything one day at a time and don’t get ahead of yourself.
You can ask anything on here so please do
Good luck Bx
Hi Ariel,
Hope you’re good. Thank you, yes positive thinking is so important. I kept busy yesterday and felt better than I’ve felt in a long time.
The waiting is the worst. The days seem to go so slowly but I will keep trying to stay busy.
Thank you, I think the nurse said the operation should be within four weeks. Fingers crossed it’s sooner.
I feel a lot better than I did this time last week, that’s for sure x
Hi Nevermind,
How are you? Yes it all makes a lot more sense now. The app caused a lot of anxiety as it said all my bloods came back abnormal, when in fact it was just the one showing I’m anaemic. The nurse confirmed that on the phone for me.
Thank you, that’s all reassuring to hear. Yes, I’m glad surgery is my first line of treatment, especially as they said it is a large tumour.
That’s terrible that they told you the op had cured you before they had the histology results. They really should know better. I can imagine the wait for the histology will be an incredibly anxious time. I will try to be brave, I have to be for my family and friends.
Thank you, your positivity is inspirational and makes me feel like we’ve got this xx
Hi Bella,
Thank you, so I’m guessing from other’s experiences, that I may get told the staging at my meeting with the surgeon, but this could change, depending on the results of the histology after surgery.
One day at a time, that’s exactly what I keep telling myself as each day is different, in terms of how I’m feeling about it all and my energy levels.
Good luck for your OH’s next appointment, keeping everything crossed for you.
Take care xx
