Awaiting consult

I have recently turned 40 years old and have always had some bowel issues, mainly what I thought was IBS. In recent months I had noticed blood following stools on a few separate occasions and assumed I had haemorrhoids. I also have bloating and some loose stools on a regular basis, as well as an increase in urgency and pain before stooling

I finally went to GP, who tested a calprotectin (negative) and Qfit. My Qfit level was 28 and GP sent urgent red flag referral to Colorectal team. GP performed a rectal exam and didn't feel it was haemorrhoids.

I assumed I would be on 2week wait for a colonoscopy, but when I phoned today a week later, I was told I had been triaged to see a consultant from Colorectal team, and that this could take up to 5weeks

Has anyone experienced this? Is it normal procedure to see a specialist before having a colonoscopy? What should I expect from my appointment?

  • Hi  28 is quite a low reading and there are quite a few things that can cause similar symptoms to bowel cancer like ibs, polyps, colitis, diverticulitis etc. so it maybe that the consultant will do a few more checks and ask a few more questions? I saw a consultant a couple of weeks before my colonoscopy and he performed a sigmoidoscopy which checks the rectal and lower part of the bowel although it wasn’t very successful as there was no prep before this to clear things out!

Only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer diagnosis and I’ve attached a link to a previous post from someone who had a similar reading

It’s always best to get these things checked out and please keep us updated?

    Take care
