NG Tube fear

Hello everyone

just had my anaesthesia pre op for my bowel (right hemicolectomy) resection op and have been told I will wake up with an NG tube in situ. This was a bit of a surprise, as with my last bowel resection I didn’t have one.

I have a shockingly bad gag reflex, even cleaning my teeth can prompt it, so I’m really anxious at this news.

I would really appreciate some feedback back on these tunes.  Does anyone have experience of NG tubes?  Are they uncomfortable?  How long do they stay in and what is the benefit of them in this type of surgery?

Sending love and positive thoughts to everyone on their journey

  • Hi  I’ve not had one of these but this reply will bump it up the board and hopefully someone with some experience might be along shortly?

    Take care

  • Hi.

    1. I had one after surgery because my bowel stopped working.
  • Hi.

Just be thankful you'll wake up with it in place. I had one inserted whilst fully awake and it was a very unpleasant experience.

I had to have mine because my bowel stopped working after surgery and it was the only way to dispose of any waste in my stomach, except for violent vomiting. It was in place for 12 days, until my bowel woke up, during which time I wasn't allowed food. Swallowing may feel uncomfortable for a day or two but you do get used to it.

I would advise being careful when moving as it's possible to pull it out accidentally.

Sorry if I've added to your worries but you'll be surprised how quickly you adapt to such things. In fact when mine was eventually removed it felt really odd not having it.

    Hope the surgery goes well.

  • Catdad.I was exactly like you.much better to have it inserted whilst under anaesthetic, not in the middle of the night like I had.

  • Katz I had the same!

I woke up from my op with an ng tube (which I dont remember them taking out - god bless morphine!). I then developed an ileus in the middle of the night and the insertion was awful!

I didn't really feel mine when it was in, my throat felt a little sore and dry from the tube but it didn't feel like anything was in my throat weirdly. Drinking plenty of water helps and hopefully you won't have it in too long.
