I had an Ileostomy reversal at 12 noon on Wednesday and yesterday (Thursday 17 April 2025) I ate two small soups and two slices of bread with butter. Today I have had three soups, 6 slices of bread and butter, some chips and a cottage pie. I have not passed any stool at all yet since my op which was 60 hours ago now. I have been discharged as I am passing wind and my wound looks OK but I feel very blocked up and worried I have a blockage. I wondered if anyone else has been though this and when they did theIt first poo, also what their symptoms were like right after the op?

  • It’s now Saturday (19th April 2025) and still no poo. If anyone has any advice I would be so grateful I’m getting worried I’m blocked and need to go to hospital…

  • I think you will have pain if getting blocked. You would also probably stop passing gas.

Are you still taking opioid pain meds? These constipate me quite a bit and I tend towards diarrhea. If possible try tapering off and using paracetamol and/or ibuprofen.

It sounds like you're eating a low residue diet. It's likely you were told to do that by your doctor and I don't recommend stopping. But low residue diets mean less is passing through to the colon so there will be less output. The diet can also be a bit constipating.

I'd call your doctor for additional suggestions.

  • Thanks Susan I really appreciate your response. I am on diazepam so will switch to non opioid pain meds and I will also call A and E if I start seeing increased pain.

    best wishes
