Hi all, I’m Hannah (34) absolutely worried sick here just wanted to see if anyone has experienced the same as me.
so I went to the doctors last Tuesday regarding change of toilet habits. The feeling of needing to open by bowels but being completely unable to no matter how long I sit there or strain. Resorted to the use of laxatives which worked after taking them but also noticed some blood too. Explained this to doctor and the fact I always feel bloated, constant burping and burning sensation in stomach. I had my bloods taken and dropped 2 stool samples off the following day one was for h pylori which came back clear and the other was FCAL4 this showed high inflammation she explained today when calling with results this should be 99 and below but my level was 498. My bloods came back and I have low iron so she has prescribed iron tablets for 4 weeks and ordered an urgent referral for a camera not sure which one as it was all a blur on the phone. Obviously I’ve done the stupid thing of googling and scared myself. 3 days ago without use of laxatives I had loose bowels, and without sounding disgusting looked like ribbons. Also to mention my stomach is sore to press and I have pain really down low in stomach. I asked on phone if this could be cancer and she said yes but it could also be other things such as ibd and crohns. Has anyone had similar symptoms that turned out to be cancer? If you have took your time to read my long post thank you so much looking forward to hearing back from somebody x
Hi Sweetie,
I can see some lovely people have given you some great advice already. All I can add is that whatever happens, you’re being looked after by people whose job it is to know what to do to make everything work for you. Cancer, as an illness is so treatable and there is so much incredible support available it’s not quite the terrible murderer we all think it is. We can help you here for a start. If it’s not cancer, they will find out what it is and put you on the right path for treatment and get you fixed! Either way it will take a bit of time, but you’ll be ok, I’m sure xxxxxxx

I’m feeling ok - trying to find the courage and positivity leading up to surgery. A month ago, I was an absolute wreck, quite honestly.
This month has been filled with ups and downs. I’ve accepted that this is the norm now.
When I feel sad, I cry.
When I feel silly, I laugh.
Trying to accept the reality that is this journey & appreciate that there is a light at the end of what sometimes feels like a dark tunnel.
Ive asked a lot of daft questions. Don’t be afraid to contact your GP, Nurse Specialist, Consultant, Macmillian for more information or clarification when you need it. I’d rather ask than Google.
Keep your head up! You’re doing amazing!
That’s good soni, stay positive do you have family to support you too? I’ve heard about my referral, looks like it’s an endoscopy can they even check bowels with that I thought it had to be colonoscopy. They said a doctor has to triage it first before giving me a date for the camera xx
Hi Beth, sending you lots of love and positive outcomes for tomorrow. Try not to worry I know it’s hard but you’re one step closer to an answer and whatever the outcome closer to getting treated. I’m ok just in pain everyday and started to pass blood, not sure if this is due to the iron tablets the doctor has prescribed or not. I had my referral but no date yet as “doctor has to triage it” to see if I come for camera or be admitted as day patient so I have no idea what’s happening and my letter says endoscopy and I don’t want to google anything but I’m sure that’s down the throat and wouldn’t be able to check my bowels so I’m stressed. Try not to worry lovely and keep me updated il be thinking of you xx
Hi Hmr
I had a couple of procedures last year and my letter said “endoscopy” which just described the clinic I was to go to. There are different procedures done there, and although my two were the camera down the throat type, they were specific procedures as there are different types of endoscopy. Certain types of endoscopies can see part of the bowel, but the doctor will decide which is the right procedure for you, so try not to stress about it right now until you know. Good luck with whatever procedure you need to have-I know how stressful it is to have these types of investigations, so good luck!
Sarah xx
Ah ok thanks Sarah I just automatically thought it the throat camera and was thinking what’s the point in that if it’s my bowels that’s the problem, and I’m not googling anything as it just causes more stress n worry that no1 needs especially this time of year. Thanks for the reply, just waiting for a phone call now to see what the plan is. Thanks again for reply xx
Hi Hannah, thanks for your reply and well wishes. I just had gas and air rather than sedation for my colonoscopy today - got through it lol, bit uncomfortable but gas and air was helpful! They found 2 polyps which they removed and sent off and diverticulitis mild and haemorrhoids. I was terrified allll day until appt but the staff were amazing and they told me there and then what they had found while I was high on gas and air lol. One of the nurses actually said to me during the procedure’it looks very clear - do u want to see?’ I said no thanks.. then I plucked up the courage to ask what they’d found.. to which they replied ‘just a polyp you’re okay’. I am still in a lot of back pain and cramps and I’ve still bled a little (not from the procedure - all just symptoms I’ve been having) so I guess I will go back to the gp to figure things out for this but knowing it’s not bowel cancer when I had convinced myself is such a relief! I’m sure once u have had the procedure u will also come away feeling so much more relieved! The endoscopy is the colonoscopy. I had an appt for endoscopy and that’s just the department… then paperwork specifies colonoscopy. Don’t be alarmed if it also says biopsy and polypoctomy as these are just procedures done within the colonoscopy. Please keep me posted Hannah - you will be absolutely fine xxx sending lots of positivity xxxx
Hi Beth, oh I’m so so glad you’re sorted and it wasn’t the worst outcome. What’s the plan now for the diverticulitis? Easily managed? Have you got wait for results of the polyps but it can’t be anything dangerous? So glad it’s over for you and you’re not stressing now. Yes I called the department and she confirmed it’s colonoscopy it actually said on the letter lower gi endoscopy I didn’t even notice. That’s what I was worried about if it hurt so they either offer sedation or the gas and air. I will definitely keep you posted Beth xxx
