Hi
I have a t3/4 rectal tumour and had a loop colostomy formed 2 weeks ago in preparation for my oncology appointment to plan for chemoradiotherapy and then followed by a surgery to remove the cancer.
My previous symptoms were a small amount of blood with wiping/stool but just been passing a small amount of mucus since the colostomy.
Last night I started passing large amounts of blood from my bowel with clots. I went to a&e and still on the ward as I'm still passing blood. They said it is the tumour and it's just one of the things that can happen. Has this happened to anyone before ? Is it likely to affect my treatment?
Hi Vic40 welcome to the forum. It strikes me that maybe the team involved with you may be contacted to pop along and see you. It seems sensible as you are already in hospital to ask these questions of the staff as they may know best. If you are still in hospital have they been in touch with your team ?
Thanks for your reply. I plan to call my colorectal nurse tomorrow and I meet my oncologist for the first time on Thursday so have lots of questions. I'm super anxious and just very fearful at the moment. Fingers crossed that I have no more bleeding overnight.
Hi Vic40 1 of my symptoms was passing blood when I went to the toilet - it seemed to be dripping in even when I went for a wee and it looked quite scary when mixed with the water already in the toilet bowl. I didn’t have an Ileostomy at this point so presumed it was the tumour being aggravated when stools were passing over it.
I found the chemoradiotherapy stopped this and my tumour shrank from 4cm to 1cm. As Gail says hopefully someone from the colorectal team will be round to reassure you - I found weekends in hospital were always hardest as the consultant on duty seemed to have to be a Jack of all trades.
Take care and I hope you can start your chemoradiotherapy soon

Thanks Karen
Yes, thanks what I have found. The ward is very stretched for staff too so I am looking forward to speaking to one of the team that knows me. It's good to know your bleeding stopped with your treatment.
Am keen to get started!
Best wishes
Vic
