Hi

My wife has just been diagnosed with a tumor on right side of her colon that has already spread to liver. This has come as a massive shock since there were no symptoms at all before a single dizzy spell that led to blood tests and then a ct scan. We are desperately concerned as she is only 44 and we have 3 young boys.

We are still yet to have a colonoscopy to come with a plan from the oncologist but would like to know if there are any things we should be pushing for, any new treatments, positive stories or anything else that we can hang on to. We are told to stay positive and to keep waiting but are really struggling and want to fight this. Any support or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for that

Chris

  • Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear your news.  She’s now in the system and care will progress quickly from here.  They’ll need to do scans, colonoscopy, biopsies and different bits and pieces to get the full picture before making a plan of attack.

try not to worry just yet (easier said than done).  I’m am still having treatment but here is one from my neighbour.  She had bowel cancer, then two different spreads to her lungs…. Over the course of three years she had three separate ops.  She’s now been cancer free for many years.

For now, if no symptoms, the best thing your wife can do is to keep herself physically as fit as possible, eat well and keep thinking positive.

wishing you and your family all the best!

  • Also to add…. Don’t try googling, the information is out of date and can be scary but not accurate., macmillan and bowel cancer uk are the good resources.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your wife. This type of cancer is very treatable, you have every reason to be hopeful.

Unfortunately it is increasingly common in young people and there are plenty on this board of similar ages and even younger.

I was older at diagnosis but like your wife, I had no real symptoms prior to discovery. I was diagnosed in Aug 23 and told I was cancer free after surgery a year later. I am currently recovering from surgery and on surveillance.  Recovery is not only possible but the most likely outcome.

As  CerysM has suggested keeping healthy is one thing she can do while waiting for more information and a treatment plan.

Wishing all the best for you and your family. Please keep in touch.

  • PS waiting is by far the hardest part!

  • Thank you very much for your reply and advice. We will try to follow this as much as possible, even though it’s hard.
Sending you positive thoughts for your treatment best wishes

  • Thank you so much for your reply Susan and happy to hear that your treatment is going well. The fact so many younger people have this now shows that screening policy really must change.

  • I've just been diagnosed with bowel cancer which has gone to my liver. I'm 53 and trying to stay positive, I just pray there is a cure for my liver

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the bowel page. The waiting for appointments is very stressful but hopefully you’ll get an appointment with a treatment plan in place very shortly. I’ve attached a link to a booklet that covers some of the treatment that might be suggested?
