I have my first meeting this Tuesday with the oncologist. I have stage 3 bowel cancer. My surgery in August was eventful but ultimately has proved successful. I will be starting chemotherapy in late October. I'm hoping for some advice on the sort of questions I should ask my oncologist?

  • Hi Marcas

Surgery is never easy, I had an anterior resection in 2017, well done in getting through your surgery successfully.

I had chemo for another type of cancer last year and with the benefit of hindsight I would have asked more about the  side effects that come with chemo, how and when to use anti-sickness and pain meds....would I need support to help with transport to chemo days ( my chemo meant 6-8 hours stay in ward each session)...take a notebook with questions for oncologist....tell oncology about any concerns you may have ....ask about after care especially out of hours.

    Take care

  • Hi  and congrats on getting the op out of the way. Questions you might want to ask are

Which chemo will I be having and how long for?

    How will it be administered?

Can I work if I feel up to it?

What side effects are the most common?

    Will I lose my hair?

The most common chemo used is capox/xelox which is oxaliplatin by iv then capecitabine tablets at home then a week break. However your chemo will be decided on your individual needs by your oncologist. If you are offered xelox then we have a handy hints post which I’ve linked in below

     CHEMO TOP TIPS UPDATED

Chemo has a lot of side effects but you’re unlikely to get all of them and they’re all manageable with the pills and potions that you’ll be given by your team.

    Hope the meeting goes well

    Take care
