Lymph nodes

Hi all I was diagnosed last October with a tumor in my sigmoid colon to cut a long story short I was very fortunate it was caught early and successfully removed in November. However on receiving the results after surgery I was told no lymph nodes were affected but only 8 were tested. At the time my head was so full of everything I didn't ask why so few were tested and have been unable to get any answers. I'm now concerned that too few were looked at and something may have been missed. Is it unusual for so few to be tested ?

Thought you might find this of interest as it seems to indicate that the distance from the tumour also seems to be significant. I guess there is no way of finding out now the distance of the Lymph nodes from the primary tumour .
Another thought that springs to mind is I assume you are still scanning well ?  Almost a year since surgery . Not sure if you are familiar but most recurrences in bowel cancer occur with in the first two years . Then the stats drop off significantly.

I can totally understand why you are concerned as from what I read the lower limit seems around 12 but it would have been helpful to know where they were located as that might bring you some peace of mind .

There is a specialist ask a nurse section where you can leave a question and they will get back to you .

It’s important to get these questions answered .

  • Hi

My op was LAR for rectal cancer, so slightly different from you, but only 9 lymph nodes were removed and tested (all clear). The histology report did state that they had checked extensively for any others but none were found. Maybe, for reassurance, you could ask to see your histology report, if you haven't done so already?

    Best wishes
