Rectal cancer and rising PSA

My husband has just been diagnosed with a rectal tumour-  we are waiting for a treatment plan.  He is also living with prostate cancer ( prostate was removed 12 years ago but he now has a rising PSA).  My main concern is that he is not in great health anyway.  He is 77 with chronic COPD and mobility problems.  We are concerned that this may have an impact on the type of treatment that is available to him.  Does anyone have any similar experience or advice for when we meet the specialist.

  • They will give him the best possible treatment available. If they don't think he is viable for some types of treatment they will be honest with him upfront. Then offer alternative options. But trust both of you to follow what you decide is the best for you. Good luck.

  • So standard treatment for rectal cancer is radiotherapy then chemotherapy to shrink before surgery.
I dont think your husband would be able to have the surgery because its a big op and your lungs need to be working well . They dont usually operate with conditions like COPD.
They will advise and tell you which would be the most suitable for him.
Hope everything goes well on his journey.
