Saw my consultant yesterday and he mentioned that I might want to consider taking aspirin 3 times a week. It seems the evidence is split if this is helpful for rectal cancer. Just wondered what others thought?
Hi Sharptoothmints , I've been taking 375mg aspirin daily for nearly a year now. There are some evidence suggesting that it could improve overall survival (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9341367/) so as the adverse effects are minor (mostly risk of bleeding), I decided to take it, just in case it does help. I was diagnosed 5 years ago with stage 3, had surgery + chemo at the time and I now have lung nodules. In my case chemo tends to wipe out most cancerous cells but there seems to be some chemo-resistant cancer stem cells so whatever might help based on scientific publications I'm taking.
Hi, Sharptoothmints , apologies but been away. Kareno62 is correct, I started the Add Aspirin trial in Jan 2020, due to end in January next year. There is either a placebo, 100mg or 300mg. It covers rectal, bowel, prostate and I believe breast. No results as yet. It is a large trial with many thousands of people in various countries. I did ask the trial nurse at the last check in, whether to keep going, or indeed if I was ever taking it. The GP is the one to ask re continuing (or maybe starting?) .
So I can't really help, but it is worth checking in with the GP if you decide to take it. All the best
