After Surgery Problems.

10 days ago my hubby had a Right Hemicolectomy, recovered well from surgery , his bloods dropped a bit and he was sore as was expected. Came home 3 days ago and been in a lot of pain,  cannot go to the toilet.  In the early hours of this morning I wanted to call 999 as he was bent double with pain

Spoke to colorectal team this morning who advised stronger laxative and seeing gp, managed to get an appointment and he examined him and sent us straight back to the hospital.

He's showing inflated markers for infection,  his bloods have dropped again and when they examined him he nearly hit the roof in pain

I've left him on the ward waiting for two bag's of bloods, IV antibiotics and  a CT scan.

I'm worried something has gone terribly wrong and he's going to need more surgery.

He's really struggling to take a deep breath and seems to be gasping/burping  all the time

Sorry for the long story but it helps writing it down and I'm sure someone will have experienced something similar in the past.

Good night

  • I’m sorry to read that you and your hubby are going through this. I do hope that he will soon be out of pain and feeling much better. It’s very difficult to watch our loved ones in pain. I don’t have any answers but I just wanted to say I feel for you and wish you both all the best.

  • Thank you, if only we did have the answers xx

  • These situations are really stressful and can I just say well done you for advocating and acting on this right away .

Unfortunately some people do have post op complications but they will have seen and treated it before and will turn this around . But you acted quickly and did exactly the right thing .

    Thinking of you both .

  • Thank you for the words of encouragement, he his currently awaiting discharge having spent the last 3 nights in our local hospital.

Fortunately the scan showed everything was still intact and there were no leakages. (our biggest fear)

The IV antibiotics have obviously worked wonders and he will be continuing with a course of oral ones to bring home.
